I collect about 90% of my own. The other 10% comes from trades. I very seldom ever buy any rocks. I have some on my wish list, but they are too expensive for me right now.
The joy of collecting my own is the main reason I do rocks.

I'm fairly new, and everything I have was either given to me or purchased. Oh, except for one piece of pet wood I found in my landscaping rocks, and half the pebbles from the playground at my daughter's school (I finally had to make her stop!)
I'd love to find some on my own, but I think I could trip over something and not know I should pick it up!! I think rockhounding with others would be a great way to start!

Hi, i'm REALLY new to this. I have got alot (what I would call alot) of what i'm assuming are Lake Superior agates. My husband's grandfather had collected them 20+ year's ago when he was alive. Some are the size of dimes up to the size of a small apple. Anywho, back on subject, lol. Now that the weather is getting nice here in Wisconsin, my sister and I were talking the other day how fun it would be for this to be a activity for her cubscout troop to get into. Hopefully we can get a trip planned this summer to start in what appear's to be a fun, educational activity. So, ya, we will be collecting our own ;D.

I'm lucky enough to live in New Mexico, a rockhound's paradise...I have collected rocks/minerals for quite some time, mostly in NM, AZ, TX, and CO.
I recently sold my 4WD so don't know how much future collecting I'll be doing but I have enough rough to keep me busy for a long time.

When I first started out I bought a lot of my rocks.
Once I found some good hunting places, my buys are limited to material I don't have or can't easily obtain.
I prefer to find my own...something very satisfying about the whole process.

Much of what we have has been found/collected by us. We also visit estate sales, especially rockhound estates, and purchase some; plus, occasionally purchase at a rockhound store or show. But mostly, for us, at least half the fun is getting out into the wilds even if we don't find much.

Man, I'm envious of some of you! I'd love to have access to some of those places! I have read about a few places in our area that have potential for some small finds, but it looks like I'll have to travel a bit more to find the best spots! ;D
