Dont feel bad Nancy! There is a lot of material listed on ebay as gem silica. Most are not and are just chrysocolla or other mixes of "copper minerals". Regardless, the cab is very pretty and I can see why you wanted it.
The best true gem silica that I have ever seen was a vibrant turquoise color and was very translucent.....with no (or very few) inclusions.

Ya know.. if you want a really good example of gem silica .. You should ask stones that Rock .. I got a special chance to get a glimps of his Absofricknlutely BEAUUUUtifUl stash of Gem .. and like they said.. but to me it looks like it glows.. But sure is a pretty cab ya got there! and ya never know.. it might have some gem spots... but can't tell from the pic..

So the gem spots would show up as translucent areas? I will check out StR's stash!

Update. Well, I received the cab today. Not a spot anywhere of translucency to be found. Ack! It's a lot smaller than I anticipated as well. *sigh* Oh well - live, bid and learn. Nancy

I hope you'll leave feedback to that effect? I mean, if it was sold as gem silica and it's not . . .

I absolutely will be, Eileen - and I emailed the seller directly to let him know that.

Good for you!
I had a guy sell me a "jade" horse figurine. It was glass. I mean, if you looked at it you could tell it was glass. It had one of those "pour" marks on the side and was way too glossy for jade.
The guy wanted me to ship it back but I only paid 10$, so it was not a big deal. I can still use it for a sculpture. I left him neutral feedback with a note about the horse.

I haven't heard from the seller yet - I'll give him until Monday and then leave the feedback anyway - he may not be that interested in preserving his 100% ratings. <shrugs>

He probably doesn't care. I bet most people that buy from him wouldn't know gem silica from agate.

Here is a better image showing a piece of tumbled rough and a piece cut as a cab and mounted in a ring. Bob

Damn that is a killer ring!!! ... I'm wondering tho... is there like different shades of silica? I'm just curious .. or is it because I've only seen it a few times and in the rough?...cuz Now I'm wondering if I have any at all... lol

Yes, there are different shades of the material. These examples are toward the green side. It also comes looking more blue/turquoise color like the first post in this thread. I have some of that color but I would have to grub through my storage locker to find it. (sure be glad to get my workshop built!!!!) I made the ring for myself about 10 years ago. I wear it daily. Thanks for the compliments! Bob

Wow, that ring is in great shape considering you wear it daily! I'd expect nicks or scratches....
Thanks for the tutorial on gem silica!
