Oh no! the rocks and their sludge are going to kill my trees! I have weeds coming up and thriving where I dump my sludge and I really had high hopes that the sludge would work to keep the weeds down. Maybe she was cutting asbestos

An abusive crack smoker fer sertun!!!! And prolly tainted crack at that!!!
The only thing I can say is that it gets a little (I say "A LITTLE" ) messy if you pour in too much oil. I do change the oil frequently (now that I know how to get the top off my rock rascal) to keep it clear enough to see the lines on stones I cut for cabs. I also choose to wear throw away surgical gloves to prevent any ugly repercussions from using 'Food Grade Mineral Oil' (aka laxative) as a coolant. I only wear a dust mask when using my dremel to smooth imperfections without water.
Like I said, a crack smoker, no doubt about it.

Very funny. Is that Banjo Prince of Rocks coming to rescue me? Love the sludge monster. TKW - how did you do that? I can't even find a decent avatar. Ok, so I get your point. She was an idiot. The Rock Rascal will be in use this weekend. I'll set it up in the garage. Can't throw any more oil than frying bacon...can it? I got some beautiful Botswana agate from www.superagates.com/index.htm today - will post photos on Sunday. Mixed with the Botswanas Redwood Rocks kindly donated, should tumble up fairly well. Too bad I don't have a tumbler free... you guys are the greatest. You make my day... Susan

you just let me know if and when you want me to come. You may have to put us up for the night though as it's a few hours drive I'll show you what I know as far as cutting rocks

Flow and Lotsa, I don't know about paying for anybody's gas, I have a hard time paying for my own gas. LOL. I don't want you to go out of your way, but Lotsarocks told me he gets up here to visit his sister every once in a while. Of course, I'd be pleased to donate some rocks. One of my great pleasures is giving rocks to folks who are rock deprived. I'm hoping to get my Rock Rascal set up here soon and I'm just gonna go for it. That's how I've done everything else so far....with the help of the wonderful folks on this board and the other great rockhounds I have met along the way. Susan

Hi My 2p (0r 2 cents) I agree with Alice above the land we walk on the land trees plants live in all around me here in the vale of Cleveland and York is glacial ground rock and some of the best productive land in uk (6 ton + of wheat per acre). The only thing different with sludge is the LUBRICANT , in the rock grindings the oil's ect. my plants are not to keen to digest the sludge so it goes in a newspaper into the garbage bin The lady must have had a bad day OR been hit on the head with one of those 800 rocks !! I visited a friend today who I haven't seen for a couple of years. He's a fellow rockhound. What I didn't know is that he has also been doing lapidary stuff for over 25 years...he took me out to his shed and showed me his slab saw, drill press, arbors, grinders, etc. (none of which are in use...). He is going to help me set up my Rock Rascal and show me what to do with it. I told him what Lily from SW Gems and Minerals had said, and he told me I don't need to worry about sludge at all, "It's just messy, wipe it away..." he said, "...what you need to be concerned about is ROCK DUST". He told me that breathing in rock dust can cause your lungs to collapse. He advised me to wear an industrial mask anytime I cut stones. More scary stuff. Oh, well. We all have to go somehow, I guess...Doc, any thoughts? Susan

I am a commercial painter and and do woodwork for new homes expensive new homes and am very fussy on how my work looks so I do a lot of sanding. I do want to live for awhile longer so whenever we spray paint or sand I wear a mask I get the one with the breather valve in the front with the 2 straps on it I think they are easier to breath through and the straps are heavier duty and don't bust. If you are creating dust wear a mask.

Arrghhh I'm Back- OK here is the thing Yes dust can be bad (any dust!) If you are gonna cut rocks DRY 8 hours a day- than yes you want protection but if you are cutting wet rocks (less dust!) A couple times a week- well then The risk is a lot less! Use COMMON SENSE!!!! I wear a dust mask when I'm working with un-known stuff but usually forgo the protection when I'm working with stuff that I'm familiar with (I.E. stuff that is not dusty when wet!) Enjoy the hobby and take what precautions you deem neccesary!
