Always soak your specimen in water for 24 hours before the acid bath. This way water soaks into the pores and will not allow the acid in.
You can also use Super Iron Out. Better for you and the environment. It can be bought at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc in the plumbing dept. As with acid, it does better when warm.

Well, I ran the test using Bar Keepers Friend (which contains oxalic acid, along with pumice; you can tell by the smell). I started out with hot water and left it in for a week. No change to the Laker that I could tell.
Navi: I wish I had read your post before cleaning up my fossil limestone. Oh well, I'm sure the school kids will like them anyway.
