Saskrock, I believe most are filling our barrels to the bottom of the top layer of rocks with water. So, if you are looking into the barrel, the top layer of rocks should be sitting just out of the water level.
Rogue, that's not what the conspiracy theorists say. They say that the atmosphere on the moon is breathable and there is some oxygen and that there are buildings on the opposite side of the moon that we never see, and the gov't is keeping this all a secret... LOL. ;D (sorry, just had to) Jo

Saskrock: Regarding the amount of water that I believe most of us use, it is to the bottom of the top layer of rocks. That is, the top layer is nearly entirely, if not entirely, out of the water.

Hmmmm, might have to try less water next time and see what difference it makes.
Now to the physics discussion, thats the fun part now ;D,
Newtons third law is not flawed by there being no gravitational push. Newtons third law shows that for example if you were to jump in the air the force you applied to the ground pushes you up but also pushes the earth down (a negligible distance because of the earths huge mass). While you go up gravity from the earth pulls you back down while at the same time gravity from you pulls the earth up (once again a negligible amount because your mass is so low). Therefore a equal but opposite reaction is applied by gravity, its a pull however not a push. The push part was your legs exerting force which pushed you an equal but opposite amount to the earth.
I can not think of an example of how the lack of anti gravity flaws Newtons laws, perhaps you can provide one.
Newtons laws are not really specific to gravity however. You really need to get into Einstein's theory's to explain it. Einstein's theory predicts Earth's gravity will distort, or warp, space in a planet's vicinity, much like a bowling ball resting on a taut sheet of rubber would form a depression. Simply put gravity is like falling into a dent in space. To have a gravitational push you would require negative mass to cause a "bump" in space, and something with negative mass has never been found.
Not to say that a gravitational push is impossible, theoretically it is possible. Every other force in nature has a negative except at this time a negative gravitational force has never been observed. Unless you count anti grav devices in science fiction.
