Hi All,
We have a request for a new board, the request comes from Saskrock yesterday.
I think its time the forum spread out a bit - maybe even adding to its title like "RTH and Everything Rocks!" - I dont know - along those lines anyway.
The new forum would read. Fossils - For Pictures and Chat relating specifically to all things Fossilized.
I would place the new forum in the "More Rock Topics and Hobbies" section.
I'll let the voting go until Saturday 24th about midday UK time. Cheers Mark

I don't know. I was thinking this was what the Specimen board was for. If we have a fossil board my pet wood would have to go in the fossil section. I guess the Specimen board could be used for agates, jaspers and such. I'm all for whatever the folks vote for.

From an organization standpoint, it makes good sense. But from a personal perspective... I only read one or two boards here on any sort of regular basis, so more boards would just mean more boards that I never look at. I'm not convinced that there are enough members reading and posting on this forum to warrant any more subdivisions at this time. -Don

Fossils are great, but I think if a "fossils" board would appear, only a few fossil addicted persons (including me) would visit it. If the fossils would be posted in the specimens area (which was a great upgrade) maybe more of us would watch them.

I actually agree about there being too many already, but I think that there should be a fossil section as it is a different area. In my opinion other sections we have now should be eliminated/combined however as a lot of them are branches of the same things.
1- Rock Tumbling and Rock Tumbling Photos should be in the same section. If nothing else I say gets looked at oh well not a big deal but this one thing should really be done.
These I think would be nice as it would save me a lot of section jumping.
2- Creating Cabochons and Wire Wraping should be in a Jewlery/lapidary work section lapidary tips could likely be a subsection of this. 3- Almost everyone puts their rock trip pictures in member photographs instead of Location Location no mater what the small print says so we could combine these. 4- the general rocks board has so little on it now it could likely be eliminated. Things would get posted elsewhere on the board.
Basicaly I feel that the original increase in areas was a good idea but i'm not to sure about how it was increased.

I guess my thought is if you start with Fossils, next comes the separate category for minerals. I understand the break out for specimens, but most fossils are purely specimens. If that fossil is cabbed, then we already have a cab area. If it's wrapped, then we already have a spot for that.
Yes, there's recent activity in the specimens thread on fossils, but how sustained will that activity be?
saskrock - eliminating original categories makes you lose a LOT of threads. And I might be wrong, but I think each thread has to be moved manually. There's no magic button that says all threads in X now belong in Y.

You are right akansan, I just tried doing it on our rock club board (only been doing it a few days). The posts do have to be moved manually. You can move the board and make it a sub board though so maybe the old posts could be put in as an "old posts" sub board of the combined section. then lock them so nothing else could go in there but they would not be lost. Moving that much stuff by hand would be insane.

Fossils are usually Specimens (we have a forum for that), but if you cut them they're slabs (we have a forum for that), and then if you take it further they're cabs (we have a forum for that). I guess they could be tumbled, too (we have a forum for that), or wrapped (we have a forum for that). Sorry, but I gotta go thumbs-down on this one ... the bases are already covered. Edit: I WOULD go thumbs-down if the poll would let me vote.

Texaswoodie, I do think theres a slight overlap on the specimen board with fossils - theres no doubt about it. The fossil board is a narrowing in on the topic and I would anticipate people coming along (who may not be members here yet or have ever heard of us) who would go into some extra depth topical chat such as which era the fossils are from, what kind of sediments they are in, where the rockbeds were, maybe the evolution tree etc. So I think (hope) it would encourage discussions in this field. I have to admit that a fossils board in particular would be useful for myself (perhaps selfishly) as Im interested in them also. I think polished petwood has the potential to go in either board (specimen or fossil) Cheers Mark I don't know. I was thinking this was what the Specimen board was for. If we have a fossil board my pet wood would have to go in the fossil section. I guess the Specimen board could be used for agates, jaspers and such. I'm all for whatever the folks vote for. Curt

Deb193 - Yes - I agree. Fossil chat (as mentioned in my post above) at a certain level of expertise is deserving of its own board. Cheers Mark specimimen is good enough for fossil pics, but might get cluttered with fossil chat

RollingStone Referencing the number of members reading and posting, what I am hoping in part is that by including a fossils section we may attract more folk from the search engines - these may also have a general lapidary interest aswell. Cheers Mark From an organization standpoint, it makes good sense. But from a personal perspective... I only read one or two boards here on any sort of regular basis, so more boards would just mean more boards that I never look at. Adrian, I like the idea of separating them from the specimen area because it may promote / generate interest in its own right as opposed to being mixed up with specimens. "Fossils" are an enourmous topic - and as above - I would hope we could even attract new members by having a section. Cheers Mark Fossils are great, but I think if a "fossils" board would appear, only a few fossil addicted persons (including me) would visit it. If the fossils would be posted in the specimens area (which was a great upgrade) maybe more of us would watch them. Adrian

Mswieting I would have to address combining boards and moving them around at another time. I do agree we could sharpen things up a bit in other areas. Its never perfect but hopefully comfortable if everyone reading gets my drift. Cheers Mark I actually agree about there being too many already, but I think that there should be a fossil section as it is a different area. Akansan, If someone were to request a new section then I have to have a vote to be fair on everyone, and these boards are both requests from members. I think/hope that a separate fossil board would encourage deeper discussion where required by people interested. If you have a wrapped fossil - it can now go in the creations board. Or if you didnt want to show it as a "creation", but wanted to know what the fossil was, you could put it in the fossils board and ask and hopefully an accurate answer would come back. Cheers Mark I guess my thought is if you start with Fossils, next comes the separate category for minerals. I understand the break out for specimens, but most fossils are purely specimens. If that fossil is cabbed, then we already have a cab area. If it's wrapped, then we already have a spot for that. Michaeljohn, Sorry you couldnt vote - why couldnt you? Did you get an error? The vote has been fairly strong in favor of the new board, I think theres overlap as Ive mentioned, but fossils are a massive topic and people would like to give a new board a try. I think it will help as the board will be so very specific. Cheers Mark Fossils are usually Specimens (we have a forum for that), but if you cut them they're slabs (we have a forum for that), and then if you take it further they're cabs (we have a forum for that). The local club I am looking into joining has a field trip coming up where they find shark teeth fossils.
Is this something someone/anyone would be interested in? If so .... If I go and find anything I will happily send it off to whoever free of charge.
I am more of an animal/human fossil person. I know .... sharks are considered under animal I think .... but .... I am a big boned admirer.
I am in no way an expert or even closely educated, but I have always loved archaeology and anthropology.
Thanks to all! Julie
