Yep...Who said that??? ;D Here's some very nice pieces of BEAUTIFUL Utah Wood. This came out of the Henry Mtns in Southern Utah. I think Arizona has Gorgeous Wood...but Utah has some very nice Wood of it's own. Steve

I think that wood has even Arizona wood beat. I think I am going to have to spend some time in Utah on my next trip south.

That is awsome material. I just think wood should look like wood(just me being a carpenter). I love the colors in that stuff.

Wow! That's amazing looking wood Steve. Was going through my pet wood book the other night and saw quite a few pics of stuff from the Henry Mtns. That is a fantastic area for colorful wood.....Mel

Those are so beautiful and this is a question I keep forgetting to ask: How the heck do you tell that it is wood? What are the tell tale signs when there is no bark or obvious knots?

Awesome Steve! I see a few fractures. Is it as bad as the AZ wood?

Ozzy, our local club (Beehive Rock And Gem) is planning an April trip to the Henry Mts. It's still in the planning stage, but I'll see if they can stay away from the week that you are looking at for the Delta trip, because I don't want to have to choose one or the other. I want it all! ;D I'll let you know what they decide, if you're interested.

Let me try to answer all these questions..... Lori...I guess that over time; you come to recognize what's wood and what isn't. I agree with you though...alot of wood shows no tale-tell signs...but it's wood. Curt...I think some is as fractured as Az. Wood...but not as much. You can tell that the last pic has more fractures than the others. Larry...I believe that most of this was surface collected. Ozzy...I've never been down to Henry Mountains...but it's one place I'd love to explore. This came out of an old collection. I know that the Golden Spike Club usually does a field trip to this area as well. Thanks for all the comments. I did a cab out of Henry Mtn. Wood today. I'll post some pics tomorrow. Steve

Nice finds Steve. I love Utah pet wood from this area. It is nearly in my backyard so to speak. Only an hour away.
Last August, I made a trip through Cathedral Valley. If you have never been here, it is well worth the trip. It is close to the Henry Mountains, and has some of the same pet wood. I picked up a lot of material. I just walked a wash until I found it. Very similar to what Steve has, and well worth the trouble.
This area is loaded with Fossils as well, but on this trip I did not find any.
I need to dig mine out. I put it away right after I got back, and have not had time to inspect it.
If Steve were to plan a trip here, I would join.

It's not fair! Why can't Minnesota have wood that nice.... or any wood for that matter! (occasionally I do find a small brown piece, tho)
