Yeah, my only Holly Blue examples are purple too. Guess that's why I've often heard it called Holly Purple.....Mel

Maryann: You know I got that Blue Holly form you awhile back? Well we cut it this weekend, oh man is it neat!!! Tony got 3 thin slices from it. Well back in Nov I got some on ebay, and I thought I got ripped off because it is that purple stuff, but it was cheap! Now I am thinking it is not so bad! It is not as nice as the blue stuff I got from you, but now that I know it is in fact still blue Holly I will have Tony cut some. The pieces are sort of uneven so I don't know how great a cab it will make! Amber

I have dug the Holley Blue / Purple since 1962, 95% is Purple, hence the name Calapooia Purple, and that i was born and raised in Lebanon,Oregon just north of the Scott Mt. Dig of the Holley Blue agate bed. You could dig all day and not fine one piece of blue / Sky Blue light blue..... Our you could move just a few yards and hit blue pockets all day long. Though the best material came from the deep digs and most were cover over by a local Person with a track-hoe. Great stuff! I'd be happy with blue or purple. Most stuff I find runs in warm tones; it would be nice to get some variety.

MAN LR! Those are some choice pieces in there! I love this board because someone always knows how to fill us in on what is what!
Post more close ups of some of those huge choice blue ones!
I gotta rope Tony into a trip to OR/WA next year

We (Woodyrock, Chasfire and myself) made several inquiries into getting into the Holly blue (purple) site. They've got the site locked up tighter than a drum and they won't even return phone calls (phone number posted on signs near the site) or letters. I would love to get on the site to dig this material, but I'm not willing to risk going to jail for it. I think the Holley blue/purple is some of the finest blues/purples you can get. As near as I can tell, a timber company based out of the midwest owns the land, and they just aren't interested in letting people in (even for a fee).

FYI, it's called "Holley Blue" because the deposit is closest to Holley, Oregon. I was under the impression that the Calapooya Purple was from the deposit next to the river, about 20 miles up the road from Holley the other direction.

I heard the same thing as 88, and I heard that from the locals. I have quite a bit of family that lives in Sweethome, and that is the story that they have gotten also. My uncle arranged for us to get in to the dig last year, but on the day we were supposed to go, one of the big wigs of the lumber company showed up in his airplane, and the mission was aborted. Too bad.

Who's having a war? I was making an observation. Apologies if it came off as snarky or disrespectful, none intended.

The Hill Family own`s the land and Cascade timber has the lease, as for the closing of the dig, It was do to a few drunk kid`s on four-track in the out closed area, Well one of the boys went north to the end of the road at high speed and lost his head on a 5/8 cable across the road, a law suit soon after and the claim signs went up.
Some think the closing was from over digging ( NO ) from the 12 million law suit that the judge would not here !. and told the family to deal with their LOST..!!

Tony Joe has no business, crossing the fence behind his family house.
Bob W. thinks he can do the same to.
