There is much literature about rocks, geology, gems ect…. I’m reading this book and highly recommend it for its information, science, wit and history. This lady can write about complex ideas in an enjoyable informative manner! bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0275991237so what books do you recommend ? and does anyone know a good novel that about a rock?

I hate to see a perfectly good thread go to waste. some must reading something! even if it is just rocks! which actually have lots to tell ! But in the above book, besides learning a fair amount of rock science, The author tells the myth of the emerald tablet. Wow! Image an emerald tablet, now lost to history, that purportedly as mystical engravings that tell of a grand secret of life. Well its being searched for and many writers thru-out history have spoken of it.

Hey deeptime, there is an interesting fact about Panther Mountain here in the beautiful Catskill Mountains regarding a suspected ancient meteor impact: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panther_Mountain_(New_York) ; it isn't a book/novel, but it is interesting. Sorry, I don't know how people can make those links clickable here. Hope you find it interesting. Don Oh, I think I figured out how to do it, hope the link works.

The link worked fine and those are some gorgeous mountains! I never heard of them! But its funny because the author of the above book postulates that the Emerald Tablet may have came from outer space! So who knows? If it exists, it might of came from that postulated meteor impact! Novel ideas about a rock!

I have a lot of books about rocks mostly dry and dusty tomes for reference, they do become hard work.

My dear mother who will be 81 soon Was going thru some boxes & look what she found! This was my book when I was 10 years old! Wow!!! I figured it was lost with so many other rarities! This book was copyrighted 1957 and is a classic I’m sure many of you remember it! Talk about dusty tomes! I love these older books With the colored illustrations! Informative and kid browse worthy ! Now I’d like to find my white cardboard mineral collection Had 9 ores glued to the cardboard with descriptions I recall the sulpher and pyrite That really had me fascinated me when I was a little pebble

I am new to tumbling, and I like learning how to do things by reading books. Most of what I have found was written before 1980. I did find Modern Rock Tumbling by Steve Hart which I did like and it also lead me to this website. Just wondering if anybody recomends a good book old or new about rock tumbling.

I can overwhelm a person with books but these books by Diane Morgan I can highly recommend They are gems if your inclined toward history & myths. and her writing really captures the imagination ! I'm really bummed because I've misplaced the Ruby book !! Its from the library. Geezh its a small room I reside in and I've turned over every rock! It'll show up.
