After reading how so many experts shun the dop I thought "Why am I wasting all this time messing with this stupid wax?" I worked a big bunch of cabs today on the 100 and 200 SiC wheels and 320 grit expando belt. Only ringer and pinky on each hand survived unscathed. I have no white left on on the other six finger nails. Plus I got my knuckles nicked bloody by the adjacent wheel at least five times. Stingy. I'm not sure if I'll be willing to go dop-less again. Is it easier on the fingers when you use diamond wheels?

I use a small covered jar of acetone or finger nail remover and let the nails soak in it over night and the stone is separated from the nail.
Pour the acetone off into another jar to save (keep covered) and wipe the stones off so they do not have a coating of dried acetone on them. The nails are clean and ready for the next stone.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned using baking soda to set the super glue. Baking soda will instantly set super glue. The reason super glue is liquid is from acid which is added to the glue, baking soda neutralizes the acid hence instant bond.
I buy dollar store superglue and can dop a blank with super glue and put the soda on it and in 2 seconds be on the grinder.
So for those of you that buy the accelerators don't waste you cash. Hope this tip helps some folks.

Jason shared this tip with me a few months ago. I have had no stones fall off since. I don't think I will be dopping again any time soon.

I don't dop anymore, I use valve lapping tools. There are 4 sizes and they work great. If the rock comes off, and it will sometimes, just push it back on. Any Auto parts store has them for around $4 each. I will try to remember to get pics to post.

ok, and then you can share your secret on how to get that fab shoine on Noreena. KD sorry i never replied KD but i finished those noreenas on a leather belt with 50.000 diamond paste and one alittle lower cant remember the grit and all diamond wheels before that -- very light touch on last two grits on the leather belt

I tried the valve lapping tool from my local auto parts store, but couldn't get the rock to stay on. I think I don't get cuts that are smooth enough to form a good seal.

O.K guys
I'm thinking of getting some green dop wax.
What would be the best inexpensive method of heating it?
I was looking at a Raytec Wax Dop pot but $45.00 seems a bit pricey.
Thanks

the cheapest set up is a tuna can and lightbulb - I use a dop pot I purchased from Kingsley North

I discovered that the alluminum hasp from a scree n door works great. It has a nice large smooth flat head that seals very well to the cab with some super glue. When it is done I just heayt the hasp up ma bit with a lighter and the cab drops right off and the hasp is pretty much ready to use again. I tried nails but the heads are not always smooth enoughto make a nice seal with the super glue. these hasps are nice ans=d smooth and flat. Stu

I dop to grind on the hard diamond discs as there is more control without the loss of flesh when shaping.

UPS delivered !!! Raytech Wax Dop Pot or R.W.DoP its a pretty nice unit takes about 20 minutes to heat the wax the thing is I re-heat the wax by candle once the dop is on the stick so it kind of a pricey unit for the simple task its doing should have just used a tuna can and light bulb! mostly

This is my new RayU Tec Dop Wax Pot or RUDoppedPot I been giving it a good work out and really like it mostly, because of the low profile design Ya see,.. I dop where I sleep and wouldn’t want to inadvertently knock it over and get hot wax on any sensitive rocks. mostly

I do dop. I'm a dopper true and true, even in the dead of winter when cabs are prone to fly off. That's when many doppers turn to gluers, but not me. Stick to my dop roots! I figured out some tricks... heat up everything, rock, stick, wax then when you get the rock on there reheat it until the wax begins to get shiney again. Let it cool down slow and use black wax if you still have problems.
Awesome dop setup deeptime. This is a bit too late in mentioning, but my dop station is a $5.00 electric skillet from the second hand store. I bolted a metal can to it to heat the wax up and use the rest of the room to keep the rocks warm. Steve

Super glue as its charms but I’ll telly ya ... dopping a rocking heart is a challenge ! mostly, because of the epoxy seam and wanting to polish both sides so I decided it was time to dop with wax I’ll never look back m0stly
