Is dop an acronym ? like Dangling Over Pot ? or does it just mean hot wax on the end of a stick ? do you or don't you?

If you're Texan and talking politics, it could be a pronoun.

I remember starting a thread like this when I got my cabber and I think most don't. I don't dop which might explain why I am so BAD at cabbing!

I have a H--- of a time with smooth lines and sweeping curves , not to mention radiuses when I don't have a stick to steer with . No stick---No control, over movement, or, pressure on wheel .
I grind the pattern off the head of a large 16 penny nail with the SIDE of a fine stone wheel . I then lay my cab blanks on a hard table top. Next I place 1 drop of super glue on the head of the now smooth nail and stand it up on the blank near center. I will sometimes glue up 50 or more blanks at a time. After a minute or two they have set up enough to pick up and shove the nail into a piece of Styrofoam sheet in a vertical position in rows. This keeps everybody in order and you can find the cab you want to work with next by simply glancing at the tops of the stones. No more digging thru a box or mixed up pile of stones and sticks to find the one you want to work next ! When I finish a cab to a certain point, I place it back in the (rack ) and go to the next one, or, if I am running out of Artsy-Craftsy or just plain getting tired of it all, I simply pick up the rack and place it up on a shelf out of harms way until I feel creative again !

I used to dop....but now that I have tried superglue...I doubt I'll ever dop again. I was so tired of the wax failing or me not knowing how to dop properly....especially in the cold. Since I've used superglue...I haven't had one stone fall off. I also have the accelerator spray which makes an instant bond. Steve

Steve, if it is smelling better, methinks you might be doping, not dopping, eh! All ther same since I switched to superglue no more cabs bouncing off the wall, floor, or something else hard to break on. Woody

I take it that when referring to politicians in Texas you pronounce dop with a long O ?

I'm still fairly new at all this and as far as dopping is concerned I'm a complete failure. I haven't managed to have one stone stay put with wax. I have a dop pot with both the black and green wax. I clean the stones well and soak in acetone before dopping. It seems like it should be a fairly straightforward process, clean, heat the wax and the stone, dop - but all my stones fall off as soon as I start grinding them. I have a glue gun, tried that, same thing - they fell right off. Anyway, I haven't tried super glue yet - maybe that's the ticket. Steve: could you talk about the accelerator spray a bit more, do you spray the rock, then use superglue, where do you buy it, and also how do you remove the cab after it's finished. Thanks, Shelley

Shelley, The accelerator spray makes for an almost instant bond. I usually put a small amount of superglue on the stone, than place my stick in it and spray right on the stick and glue. Sometimes I have to put a little more glue around it and do another zap...but almost instantly it makes a serious bond! I'm not sure where I even got it from to tell you the truth. I think it came with my trim saw when i bought it...with a few other goodies. I am not sure if I'm even using it the right way...but it seems to work. After I'm done cabbing...I scrape the superglue off with an exacto knife. and sometimes...it takes more than just a scrape. Hope that helps. Shannon...ssshhhh! ;D ;D ;D Don't give away my 'how to always wear a smile' secrets ;D Steve

In my best Shakespeare voice, "To Dop, or not to Dop, that is the question"
I seldom do. I think this is why my fingernails are always short. I never use clippers, either.
The few times I have is because the stone is so small, or I put it in a Drill to spin it as I grind. I do use Green Dopping Wax when I do. Never could get epoxy or glue to hold like I want. I just pre-heat the stone, then let them cool natural. Only lost a couple of dops this way.

Thanks, Steve and deeptime. At this point I've pretty much given up on having fingernails....I'll try the glue stuff and see how that works. Happy dopping AND doo wopping!! Shelley

Do you warm your stone? This can be helpful. Put the stone on the dop pot to warm before dopping. Also, dip your fingers in water and spread the dop out in an even slope. Oil should be removed especially when using super glue. Alcohol rub is usually sufficient. A good size diameter dop stick for the wax, and metal one is best with super glue. I’m no dop expert but happy doo wopping dopping ! edmostly

I'm new at this, but the book I got is old. Cabochon Cutting by Jack R. Cox. I have never lost a cab. The book says to place some wax on your heated stone. A fool proof way of letting you know the stone is the right temp. This give you a very good bond. Works great. My dop sticks pre doped, and I reuse them until they need to be re doped.
