The recipe used for roasting rocks is patented and can be viewed on the website www.freepatentsonline.com The patent number is 6132291. It is essentially a slow ramp up and down of temperature. You increase temp slowly because a rock with high moisture content can burst when the water turns to steam. It's mostly common sense and trial and error. A toaster oven has better temp control and less wasted energy. Low tech would put the rocks in a tin can full of sand and build a fire around it.

Very interesting discussion! I will definitely give this a try. Unfortunately, my home oven only goes to 500. But I'll try it nonetheless. If that doesn't work out, I'll seek out a kiln for a more serious go around. I can't wait to see how it turns out! I'll take/post lots of before/after pics.

500 should be fine. Maybe let it sit at the top for a while longer.
