Well, even if the blade is not your work, the bolsters and the lapidary work is exquisite! I know how unbelievably difficult is to put even a satin finish on a blade, I cannot imagine how hard is to get it to a mirror shine, especially with "cave man" tools as you said Adrian PS. If you started a new knife, please don't forget to take pictures of this one while working at it. Your grand son might also enjoy watching the making of his gift.

Here`s a little tip for knife handles. When you cut or buy slabs make sure that they are sister slabs that way you will have matching handles. If you need more info just pm me.......Rocky

Ken I took Jay Fishers way of testing my slabs and slam them down on a bench to giveum a QC!
Lotsa tumblin material left but not too many knife handle slabs!
slam,,no good, slam no good, slam no good, slam yippee a goodun slam dag gone sister slab didn't hold up too good,,,,,,
slam,,no good,slam,,,,,,,,,,,,
Don't it kill ya havin to do that???
The Bowie knife handles were pretty big so that made it harder to get mating handles which I didn't end up getting! Grrrrrr!! Ya don't see any photo's of the spline do ya? that's cuz I couldn't find a sister that would cooperate! lol
If it weren't for the slabs rockyblue sent me I'd still be slammin away!!! lol
I had NO idea what I was getting into here and a LOT of people don't realize what it takes to do this type of work.
Heck I'm think I'm gettin into 'production mode" now,,, bangin out a knife every couple months er so! lol
Adrian I'm sorry to say that I have already started the fillet knife without taking photos. This is another interesting challenge as well. the blade is only 0.048" (1.219mm) thick so I had to cut a slot for the blade to fit perfectly through the brass guard for silver soldering. There was a lot of work in making the guard as well.I started with a piece of 1/8" x 1" x 2" brass flat stock, annealed it,cut the slot in it,bent it to the shape I wanted it to be,sanded and sanded and sanded it,,filled it,filled it filled it,sanded it ,sanded it,polished parts I couldn't get to after soldering and finally solderer it to the blade.
I suppose I could start taking photos from this point on.Although it's not my favorite thing to do while being frustrated! lol
Do you really want to see a bunch of mistakes being made at their VERY best? Do you want me to show all of these people what a fool I really am? lol Do you want me to embarrass myself in front of my oldest g'son??
Well I'm NOT one for hiding my mistakes as long as someone (especially me) learns from it and as far as embarrassing me,,,,
I don't think that's possible!
rockds, thanks for the compliment! Being a collector would you be willing to give me a rough idea of what this knife may be worth? A lot of people have asked me that and I have NO idea.
Brian, thanks,,,, To get all of these compliments is REALLY overwhelming!
rockyblue,,, I think finding the right slabs with the quality needed is one of the toughest parts of this entire process!

Tom, I'm sure you make mistakes, we all do and the way to progress is paved with them. But your final results look so good and besides you don't have to post all the pics, you could sellect the least embarrasing ones Adrian

Tom, quit slamming slabs. A better way is to wet it and stick it under a warm lamp. When it dries, it will show all the flaws that will break. If it is a healed fracture, it won't show, so it is O.K.
Also, turn it over and do the same thing again. I leared this the hard way. Sometimes a break won't show on one side, but will on the other.
I have a request for an all rock knife and am just starting on it. Obsidian blade. Gonna be SHARP.
NO, Adrian, I am not taking pictures either. Not a photographer. Just look at some of my posts if you don't believe it. ;D ;D ;D

Beautiful knife and workmanship. But I don't think I would use it to field dress a deer. Tom

OK Adrian you win!!! I started taking photos yesterday and after I finish the knife I will create an album the James Bond way,,,,"For Your Eyes Only" LOL Kidding aside,,,I will post an album for all to see however,,,,,, anyone caught laughing will be immediately ejected from the theater without reimbursement of any costs they might have incurred to view the album!! Those who are caught laughing out of control will get stoned and I don't mean the "smokin" kinda stones either! Maybe it might be a good idea to get stoned (the smokin kind) before ya take a seat!!!!!! Ken, Good idea of the way to check for cracks!! I used to pour a bit of gasoline into a suspect distributor cap, blow on it and look for cracks! They showed up like a street walker in a convent! Never even thought of doing it with rock slabs!! Thanks,,,,, M'm'rat,,, Thanks,,, My intention is to make a display case for the knife out of Brazilian mahogany but my wood skills are lacking to say the least. Give me some wood, hammer and a saw and I can destroy the world,,,,, Why do ya think I don't make wood handles on my knives? ?? connrock

I checked out the link you sent and his aren't as good as yours. Of course, I may be partial toward you, and we both know I don't know anything about knife making, but if it were a contest and I was the judge, you'd win! T

Beautiful knife. I love knife craft, I made a 1inch locking thumb knife once from a silver spoon I've got a few penknife blades somewhere that I will be turning into something sometime when I can get my life sorted out

Your welcome connock I completely agree with that way of thinking and thanks for that thought. Most of the time I don't let things get in my way when I want to go do something but sometimes it gets all a bit crazy, but its ok nothing too major just decisions
