Chain drive will work fine. 1) It's a little noisier. 2) Contamination causes far more damage than with a belt. 3) Parts are harder to come by for the do-it-yourself. 4) Matching pitch / length / alignment takes time. 5) Chains need periodic lubrication. 6) Chains are great for larger units. If you keep the pedals from the bike, etc. etc. etc. ...you know where I'm going with this, right?! lapidaryrough is correct about the continuous duty thing, if you have a couple of expendable door openers you can try them first to get your design right (you'll certainly have enough chain ;D).
