These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read. This is one paragraph that should be in every book in every school room in every city in every state in our great Union ... Our educators should make a lesson plan on this one statement and instill these words in the minds of all students.
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation..
5. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

They're trained that way - people that want handouts keep voting them into office.

You give handouts to the poor to keep Democrats in office....you give handouts to corporations to keep Republicans in office. Judging by the results of the last 2 administrations and the present state of the economy, neither one works. If all the extreme rightists and leftists went out and hanged themselves, the rest of us would be able to get on with living without being bombarded by all this BS.
All I'm hearing (reading) is that we have to get the other party out of office and things will get better. It happens every few years and nothing really changes. Instead of complaining, how about some CONSTRUCTIVE comments on how to make things better. Start out by defining better, keeping in mind 360 million people with different ethnic backgrounds, religions, economic situations, and keeping in mind that we whites think we know it all, when apparently we don't.

Lee, Yup, I'm with you on that! I read online news/opinion sites, and complaining seems to be the rule, realistic suggestions on how to make things better are pretty much absent. Human nature I suppose... so easy to say that everyone else is making a mess of things, so much harder to come up with positive solutions. Can't say I have any great solutions myself, but at least I try to keep my whining to a minimum. -Don

Lee First off, I don't see what skin color has to do with anything. I don't think a hard working black man wants his hard earned money taken away from him and given to someone that doesn';t want to work anymore than a Hispanic man or white man does - honestly don't know where you're coming from here. There have been lots of constructive ideas from both liberals and conservatives in the various threads on this boards. Not on this one in particular. Sometimes an idea/thought gets thrown out and others just respond with simple agreement/disagreement. Not every thread needs expansive idea exchange - sometimes you can just read and move on - however the mood strikes you. But feel free to let us know if we're doing it wrong... Plenty of democrats take money from corporations, and plenty of republicans spread unneccesary (but popular) pork in their districts. Most folks don't like the middle-road - too much compromise/concession to values and beliefs. That's why the debate here is usually polarized. But fence-sitters are welcome. It takes all kinds.

Oh sheesh. Many of us have had suggestions on what we can do to make things right. Somebody drives by and says all we do is complain. This is why we need to wake up and get involved.
As an example, the State of Texas could save million of dollars a year by making English the official language of Texas. But they won't do it. Why is that? One simple, common sense law and they won't do it.

Not just another drive by...I think out what I want to say before jumping in. Check out how many political posts I've participated in.....mmmm, none that I'm aware of until now.
Sands - I agree with you 99% on the post that started this thread and your reply to my post. The only exception I have is your unwillingness to provide health care to illegals. That's about the same as shooting someone in the head and disposing of the carcass if they are sick or disabled. I'm leaving religion out of this thread.
Toad - money from corporations and pork spending is a red herring here. All parties do it. It's the nature of the beast.
"Most folks don't like the middle-road" - true, but we wouldn't be having this discussion if it wasn't for compromise/concession. Our country was founded on compromises and concessions. I'll bet that in 1775, the extremists were complaining while the fence sitters were working to make this country what it is.
Color - Political correctness and rose colored glasses are the same - We whites (mostly in the South) have been repressing minorities for centuries here. Check out the history behind the 13,14,15, and 24th amendments to the constitution. That repression and the perceived opportunities in the North led to a migration of blacks to our cities. Well, the opportunities weren't quite there and pockets of poor people grew. We didn't develop many opportunities for minorities...they couldn't do it because that takes money. Got so bad that we had to feed them or let them die. (There are individual exceptions that made good)
I got caught in the message length limit when I tried to reply earlier...stopping now.

Lee, not trying to lay red herrings - I was trying to say that republicans and democrats both do the same junk, sometimes to greater or lesser extents - but they all do it.
Color - your comment was not about oppression of minorities. It was about white people thinking they know it all. That's a very broad generalization and has nothing to do with the topic. Just trying to figure out why you put it in there.
Oh yes, and glad you weren't a drive by. Todd

I guess the point that I was trying to make was that the oppression was a precursor to the welfare state so many are complaining about. What we did in earlier times we thought was right...and we were wrong. It sounds like a generality because it was generally what happened.

There are a lot more white people on welfare than minority people. So who was oppressing the white folks?

Yup, but nobody talks much or worries much about the whites on welfare. They are opportunists.
Pay attention, I'm starting to make constructive suggestions! The trouble with constructive suggestions is that they are sometimes unpalatable. Did you (not just you , Todd) ever think what this country would be like if we were still mainly an agrarian society? With 60-75% of us living on small family farms? Talk about solving problems....we'd be too busy to have half the problems we have now.

only thing i have to say to why i dont want to support illegals is there here illeagally and why should they get the same treatment that people that where born here and paid taxs all there lives and then told we cant give you anymore and yet all an illegal has to do is walk in the doctors or hospital or welfare office and hold there hand out -- but let a real american try that and its well you get to much money on ss or theres a co payment just to get in the doctors office or wheres your insurance card at the hospital -- thats just plain bull sh-t they should be turned away and deported -- if it was possible to deport every illegal in one week you would see america come alive again with jobs and surpluss money -- why should i or anybody else have to give our tax money to criminals with a smile -- hell my mom could use some help with payin for her meds like the ones that cost like 400 everytime they get filled -- so ill sayit again thats plain bullsh-t ---- same with liftime welfare dregs i dont care what color they are i say black all the time because i grew up in philly and im sure there where white people on it but im bettin 75 or 80% where black and on it since they had there first kid just like there mothers
