I have gotten to be friends with morerockspleaze, BeLinda on here at RTH. She asked me to ID this bright purple rock. I am inclined to think it is sugilite, but not sure once I saw the underside. So maybe some of you can help her? Here is what she told me: Amber this piece belonged to a fellow rock hound who had it sitting out on a table with a bunch of other rocks covered in nasty oak leaves and I had admired it several times and this time when I said something about it he said to take it since I liked it so well. You would just be plain drooling over his collection, I know I do. He did not know what it was but I can tell you he has some high dollar rocks sitting on that table. Just out in the open. Gotta love friends with drool worthy rocks right? So lets see if Mel can help BeLinda, a fellow Texan!

How soft is it? The purple veining reminds me of sugilite as well. If it's fairly soft, I'd say sugilite. (Sugilite is 5.5-6.5 MOHs.) The one piece I have of it cut super easy and had similar veining of the purple in the host rock.

Definitely garnet on the crystal specimen. Purple stuff might be a varietry of bertrandite ( Tiffany Stone). Color does look good for that sugilite too but I know little about that material as I've never worked any....Mel

Looks like sugalite to me too but that slice reminds me a bit of charoite. That one is soft too.

Looks like Sugilite or Stichtite but not sure. I am sure it is not Lepidolite.
