Finally got to hook up the Geni today and try it out. First thing I came up against really bummed me out. After removing the strapping and the piece of wood under the unit, I realized it would not sit level. The wood on the base was bowed with both sides raised up a bit so there was a bad wobble. I called my husband out to look at it and it turned out the base was cracked, probably in shipping. I was so upset that I would not get to try it out today so my husband worked on it a bit and used some clamps to flatten the unit and hold it steady. I am going to have to get ahold of the guy that sold it to David and see if he can get a new base for me. Well, after reading the books and then trying it out, I have got to say, it will take a bit of getting used to but MY OH MY, what a difference it makes! I took a rough piece of carnelian that I got from Titania and did a free form to break the wheels in. I was in shock at how fast it was and even though I have not used polish, I worked it through 3000 and may not need polish. The piece of carnelian is so much more beautiful than I had thought it was and I think I am going to have to keep this one as the first! Then, I used two preforms that I had made out of some tumbling rough that I had gotten from....1rockhound. It is snake river dendrite agate. Now, the smaller one did not come out as good as I would have liked, especially after I dropped it and got a nice little fracture mark on it but oh well, It is still pretty. Here are all 3 together I think I have to head back out to the garage and see what else I can do ;D Fran

Wowser! That carnelian is nice! Genie bases suck! Mine soaked up water and bowed so it wobbles too. Need to replace it with marine plywood. You'd think for that kind of money, they could supply a nice waterproof base. After all they do get wet. You'll find the aggressive cutting on the coarse wheel don't last long either. Overall, I like my Genie. I'm on my second motor ( first one burnt up), have has multiple sets of wheels and I have to use an aftermarket under wheel spray unit as the Genie unit had been kind of crappy from the time I bought it and only works intermittently. Genies sure are better than the old silicon carbide unit I started on though....Mel

I had the same problem with the Genie base as soon as I set it up. Maybe the weakness of the fiberboard base combined with tight straps bows them. John at J S Gems helped arrange for a free replacement from DP. You could easily make your own though.

Very nice cabs. The Genie and Titan sure are nice cabbing machines. Their only drawbacks are the wheels being close together and the drive motors that are built for one wheel on each side rather than 3 on each side. A friend took his to a motor rebuilder when the motor fried, and the rebuilder used different capacitors to compensate for the load. He has never had a problem since.

Thanks everyone! Karock, you will not believe the difference! After using my flat lap for so long and finally this, well, it is a world of difference! Randy, I know! I kept looking at it and saying, as soon as I get this put away. I finally told my husband I don't care, I am going to get to my machine and set it up. Boxes have been pushed to the sides and I haven't unpacked a thing all weekend! Feels good! Fran

Wahoo, good for you! You'll be turning out cabs like crazy Just be careful how you set up your process. I made the mistake early on of doing cabs in stages..a lot of them at a time.. before I change the wheels..so, for example, because it is cold I can only work an hour or so a day before my hands freeze so I haven't been changing wheels..and I have over 100 old cabs ready to have the backs done, and over 100 new ones ready to go to the 600 wheel I have been working for months now, but have nothing to show, lol.
