Tumbled some yellow/pink quartz hearts with some other stuff in my UV-10. Locally, we have quartz in large size and very solid with this crinkly appearance and it tumbles well when pre-cut. Only one of the 11 hearts needs a touching up with the cabber. Oh yeah, there are some preshaped cabs too. In this load, I also did some mini-biker-pendant preshapes. They will become leaves for some cool new gem trees that I have in mind... Randy, I have no clue how many "pendants" (leaves) I did in this load. LOL. Thanks for looking you guys. Love to all. Jo

Nice!
How are you cutting the inside curves on the "vee" part of the hearts? Ginding pin on a Gryphon?
I've got to get brave and try a few, but could use some direction.
Darryl.

Pretty batch Jo! I think I'm gonna have to give the yellow quartz a try! Those gem trees you do are gorgeous and I'm sure the yellow quartz leave are gonna look sweet!

Darryl, believe it or not, I do it on the WF to start and then into 220. After 2 days in 220 (following Randy's recipe), I took my Dremel with a diamond cone shaped tip and smoothed the ones out that needed it in that vee spot (cleft). Then, 500 prepolish and AO polish in the vibe. Not all of the hearts needed it. Hope this helps! (got some Laker and Red Jasper hearts in the vibe right now)
Thanks Steve! These will be wrapped and on my site with the trees asap!

LOL Julie, you are too kind. I did some in a previous batch, but gave them all away! LOL. That is the best thing. So I had to make more.

Very cool!! Hey, how long do you leave them in the coarse stage? Fine? Do they lose much size? I'd like to do a batch of those as well (batch of PA quartz), both pendants and some chips for a gem tree. Just trying to figure out what I'm in for. I still have a few hundred pounds of that stuff from the visit last year. lol

Thanks again Sara. Hey all, I just wrapped six of these and posted them today. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=wwp&thread=35866&page=1Randy, I shape them with the saw, then start them in 120/220 (following your recipe) for two rounds of two days each in the vibe. Then I inspect and whatever didn't get smoothed out, I'll touch up with my cabber or dremel with a cone shaped diamond bit. Then two days in 500 prepolish and this batch only needed three days in AO polish. Definitely roll the chips in the rotary first to smooth out. I cut slabs from my quartz, then cut tiny triangles (and whatnot) Randy-style, just like your biker pendants. Mike, there are three trees that I finished last week on my website. I looked for bases for the new trees today. Have a cool concept in mind, but what I can find for the base will determine the rest of the piece. I think I'll get about three or four trees out of this batch. Jo

Cool, I'm gonna do a batch of the yellow/brown quartz (I call it "honey quartz"). I has a really clean look and I'm sure that it will polish like glass as long as I know what I'm doing. Up until this point (as you know), everything that's ever gone into my tumbler has been the blade torturing agates and jaspers, but it's time to get more versatile.

Haha, you won't know what to do when you find that you are cutting all day and haven't worn out the blade yet, will ya? Oh... maybe you will... wake up and cut some more. Oh yeah, I don't use cushion in the 120/220 stage, but I use lots of a combination of ceramics, plastic pellets and tile spacers in the 500 and polish cycles. Fran, Thanks! I feel like I just can't keep any kind of consistent work done. Have to keep cleaning up and putting away everything any time we have to show the house. Sorta feel like I have Alzheimer's... hafta ask myself what the heck I was working on, so I start something new, LOL. It's driving me bonkers...

Ahhh, the cushion for 500 and polish makes plenty of sense. I have to do that with tigereye because the edges turn white if I don't. BTW, I have enough PA rocks to wear out a couple of blades I think. We'll find out. ;D
