Hi Paul, Thanks for posting the photo's of the rough. It looks just about the same as what I got as far as sizes go but I noticed that you have 1 nice looking piece of green rough in there too! It seems to me that this particular rock has a few different names depending where it comes from and who is selling it too. When I was making my Alamo Bowie Knife I wanted something "special" and out of the ordinary for the handles and low and behold I found this outstanding piece of what was called Hickoryite. This isn't the exact lot I got the handles from but it's an example of what another name for this material is. Anyway,,,here's a photo of the handles on the knife I made which I believe are really a Rhyolite I don't know the difference between Wonderstone,Hickoryite,Savana Jasper or Rhyolite but basically they all look the same to me with only a slight difference in the patterns and some of the colors? If you or anyone else knows the difference PLEASE jump in here and share what you know about it,,,,,,,,,the! Good luck Paul and maybe we'll see each other in the Winners Circle! connrock

i did not take pictures . but i did seperate from my filler rocks in the 12lb barrel the royal Nevada had dropped to 2- 1/2 lbs i did my one fix on some of peices with80grit wheel , which is allowed . i divided rocks into 2 --- 3lb brrels with filler . they still need more time in rough so i put 3TBSP 46 -70 grit in each . i am going to use ALL of the allowed time on this batch . --paul

Well so far roughing this material has been pretty easy but I've never done any of it before so I have to wonder when my problems will start! It's probably a real toughy to get a nice shine on???
Dunno but I can't help to feel that the "hammer" will drop when I try to polish it!By then, there's not much time left to "play" with it!
Good Luck All!!

Connrock: I don't know that to tell you about getting a good polish on that stuff. I've had very mixed success with some types doing pretty well ( The Goldfield Gem claims stuff) and some doing very poorly ( Yermo, Tonopah, and NE California stuff). It's all about grain size and porosity. To me the best way to tell how well it will do is to wet it and see how quick it dries. Some wonderstone tends to suck the water right in and dry out real fast. Those types suck to polish and I was always happy if I got even a satin finish......Mel

Mel you may have hit the nail RIGHT on the head!!
Although it was a warm day in the 80's here with a VERY slight breeze, the rocks dried up so fast I couldn't even get my camera on and set before the rocks started to dry up on me,(see photo's above).
If you look closely at the photo's,especially the close-ups,you cans see the rocks starting to dry out!!
This is where I'm pretty sure the problems will start and I've NEVER had ANY luck polishing rocks of this type! LOL
Oh well,,,,,,Maybe 3rd place last year wasn't that bad after all! LOL
Better take it and run with it!! LOL

i just pulled these out of burnish after 10 days in 500 silicone . i amstarting to think that they may turn out good. here are some new pictures .... wet wet mostly dry , just a little wet . so you can see the difference this is probably the most shine that i have ever gotten at this stage ( after 500grit ) now for 1000 AO , then polish dry dry , after 10 days in 500 silicone . Thanks for looking ! --paul

Paul,
Those *do* look great, nice job! It looks like you have the pit demon under control as well. Your patterns are good, I like the shaping, and you've got some great colors.

,,,,,,,and this years contestants are,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Prolly the worst photo's I ever took but it's sooooooooooooooo hot out that I didn't want to have to do them over again. On a scale from 1-10 they are about 8 times as polished as the photos show! One of the best shines I ever got but the photo's sure don't show it! I had a LOT of rejects and of course they're the prettiest ones ,,,,again! Grrrrrrrrr!!! Most are LOADED with zits,,,,or is it pits?? LOL Even an over night burnish in this didn't work,,,,,, ;D There was 1 that mel liked,,,a pink one but unfortunately it had "acne" soooooooooooooooooo bad it hid all by itself behind the tumbler!!Musta been embarrassed,,,,do ya think?? LOL In any case,,,,,the rocks will be hittin the "Oroville Express" straight to the competition headquarters ASAP! Good luck to allllllll!! connrock
