... get a good shine on soft stones? I tried using my normal cerium oxide on a spinning carpet pad (NG). Then I tried chrome oxide on my felt expanding drum (NG). Apparently, that took off a lot of the soft stuff, and left the cab with funny looking dull ridges. I then went back to my polisher and smoothed it all out again, and then ran it on my canvas pad with 14,000 diamond paste. That gave the best results, but I think it could be much better still? I've had the same issue with Lapis. So, whats the secret? Kind Regards, Bill

I find that using a cotton buffing wheel and zam (green rouge) gives the best results. i hit the buffer after the 14000 wheel.

I've been using "Ultralap" discs from here www.thebombaybazar.com/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=2567192&showprevnext=1 and have been able to get a fair to middlin' shine on softer stuff with them. I just stick the lap on the backing pad on the end of my Lortone arbor and go to it. Of course, YMMV ;D Here's an example: Lepidolite supposedly has a 2.5 hardness in one direction and a 4 in another. But this turned out ok - not perfect, but ok: Tom

I also use zam after the 14,000+ polish with diamond

I've used two different methods: 1. Zam on a hard felt wheel on my jewelry buffing machine and, 2. Rapid Polish on a slow spinning hardwood (walnut) wheel. Bob
