My guess for the extra shaft is for getting in the way so you can't get the cover to fit over the motor. Bob

My question is "why does it turn the wrong way?" a short or anything wouldn't make it change direction.

My question is "why does it turn the wrong way?" a short or anything wouldn't make it change direction. That's a good question. I am assuming it is someone's attempt at replacing the motor. Thing is, it could not have been used after since the motor was not right, and I thought the guy I got it from had used it because he said he bent the blade. Otherwise it is in good shape, and I only paid $200, so I am not too upset about the motor. I think he might have meant that he bent the blade while transporting it. It was surplussed from the geology lab at a college where his wife works. Anyway, the new motor is on the way, and I can return the split-nut.
