Kinda numbs the fingers so you dont feel them being ground off. ;D ;D ;D You sure feel it when they warm up. Ken

You know Ken, this raises an interesting question. I wonder if any of our members have figured out a way to preheat the water going to their cabbing machines ? With a drip type system, it could probably be done with a tropical fish tank heater preset to about 80 degrees. But with the under wheel spitters, it would pose a problem. Maybe one of those greenhouse grow mats under the pans, to bottom heat the pans ?

By heating the water it may help because the cold makes the stones fall off. Never though much about it, just keep a heater nearby to warm my fingers. Ken

Hey Ken, my shop is in an unheated breezeway. I've had a few pop off the dop sticks from being too cold. I've had tumblers freeze solid, and had to bring the pans from my Genie inside to thaw out in the kitchen sink. These S.D. winters get cooooold.

I'm a whimp and just shut my tumblers down during the freezing time of year.

Ah Mel, where's your sense of adventure ? Actually, I can't speak for Ken, but I do use dop sticks. But the wheels on that Genie are so close together that an occasional knuckle gets dinged.

I too, use dop sticks. But I rough them out by hand first. I work in the basement and it isn't heated. Not cold enough for a fire yet. I took 2 wheels of my Diamond Jem so they are about 5" apart so I can get knives in there to grind them. I have another set of wheels on a 12" shaft with 60 and 100 grit on it. The 60 grit is where I got my fingernails. Ken

I waer Nitrile gloves for everything but using the flat lap. They do help keep your fingers warmer.
Do not use them on a flat lap as they get pulled under the stone which gets pulled off the side of the lap where the edge of the lap cuts your fingers - really cuts them if you are using a 60 grit 12 inch lap like mine!

I have the same thing but without the cold water, I use Gator tape on my finger tips, its a green gauze type tape and I always have a few rolls in the shop. I rarely use dop sticks anymore and have had to stop cabbing for a few dyas to let the bleeding stop
