Mossyrockhound - Thank you for your story! H. Elton Carey was my grandfather. I'm sure he did live on the ranch when you and your father were there. Carey agate was mined out long before he moved to Arizona. It is now considered extinct. It was only found on the ranch on Oregon. (The ranch is also gone.) He sold the rock to rock lovers from as far away as Germany. My grandfather continued rock hunting and lapidary work until his death in his late 80s. He was an amazing, fun-loving man. When he retired, he had a little rock shop in southern Arizona which he called his castle. Carey agate is such a beautiful stone and holds so many memories for me. If anyone met my grandfather during rock hounding adventures, I'd love to hear from you. He traveled all over the US and Mexico rock hunting and visiting shows.

It’s so interesting reading these stories. My grandfather used to be really close with quant, hoot, etc.. and was one of the original big time rockhounds out of prineville. I remember being a kid and my grandpa introducing me to people mentioned in this thread haha.
