Howdy folks; Any of you other guys with a new Covington 10" saw have this problem. Was into a honey of a piece of wood this evening and the power feed rod quit turning. It did this once before but started back up and I think the rock binding against the blade was the problem that time. This time though, the blade was running free and cutting the wood like butter. This was my third slab off the hunk and much smaller than the previous two which had cut easily with my newly sharpened blade. feed stopped right at the end with only a thin piece to go and did not start back up. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I sent Covington a query but so far they ain't been real responsive to any questions I've e-mailed them....Mel

I had mine stop twice like that. The first time seemed to be a really hard rock and the clutch was working it and then it just stopped. I backed it up and then it started working again. The other time I was ready to toss it out the garage. Turned out the blade guard had gotten stuck on the rock vise. It was the 3rd slice and it was pretty close to the vise. I hope that is all it is for you. Fran

Fran, Yeah, I wish that's what it was too but I was not close to the vice yet and keep my blade guard propped up a bit to avoid that problem as that used to be an issue with my old saw too *sigh*.....Mel

Curt: I must admit that though it cuts well when it cuts, the unit is more complicated than my old saw and therefore that much more annoying....Mel
PS: Curt wait till the sun comes out and I can get a pic of the wood I was cutting on today. It's very weird and awesome stuff and it was a piece I had thrown onto my "don't look too good pile"

Don't know if the new Covington saws are the same, but my old one has 2 jam nuts that are used to adjust the clutch on the power drive. Mine was stalling out too, until I adjusted The clutch tension. Don

Don. I think that is the issue but the instructions on just how that adjustment is done are kinda vague. I'll see if Covington answers my e-mail and if not, I guess I'll just have to wing it. It sucks to not be mechanically inclined. I rule with animals but me and machines is a bad match *L*....Mel

loosen the double nuts on the clutch, turn the inside nut down to tighten the clutch, reset the double nuts. That is how the ones I have work, I had to tighten both of mine down. I still have problems with one of them, the other one I think I got right. Anyone wanna buy two slightly used Covington saws?

Man! Ok reread the instructions and now it sounds like I'm not seeing a part on the saw. Instructions mention a plastic nut on the clutch rod and Tony, you've mentioned a double nut. The power feed end of my drive rod only has a black housing with a set screw and a "single: metal nut showing. Is the plastic nut inside the housing where you can't see it without taking the unit apart or am I missing something?. Have I mentioned how useless the instructions with this saw are? *L*......Mel

They are pretty bad instructions. Mine are a bad xerox copy that is very hard to read! Fran

Just talked to Brian at Covington about the feed problem. Think I know what the problem is with the clutch now and how to correct it. Wife had me out shopping all day and I'm too pooped to deal with it now but I'll try to tackle it in the next couple of days to see how it works. ( Why does shopping wear a guy our more than a fist fight and yet it seems to invigorate wimmens?) That just ain't right *L*.....Mel

Nope: man rules say there is a special shopping exemption for guns, rocks, knives, cowboy boots and horse gear. Special negative points for the most awfulest of shopping, clothes, groceries, home repair items, and worst of all appliances and furniture. Aye god, how many friggin wash machines, ovens, fridges or sofas can a woman look at? They all friggin do the same friggin thing, they wash clothes, cook food, keep food cold or support yore ass....Man!......Mel

Don't know how I'd hold up in a fist fight (I was raised that women don't do that)....but I get totally exhausted shopping for any of those things you mentioned, but could hang out at Tractor Supply for a long time. But all in all, clothes shopping is the WORST! My husband holds up much better than I to all shopping, but he just goes in, gets what he needs, and gets out.
So not all of us play by the man/woman rules too well. Sue

Ma [wife] wanted me to help pick wallpaper for the one wall in the house that has it, told her I'd have to get pretty drunk first [dulls the enjoyment]. One evening after supper she said " here's the books" and set two huge catalogs in front of me; and a jug of my favorite sipping stuff.

Hey Mel, with the 10" it might be different, mine are 18" and 30" but they are both the same. Hope you get if figured out.

Tony had problems with his big saws. I've sold a lot of the 10" saws and only heard complaints on how hard to clean with the divided sump and a couple of instances of pulleys coming loose. Almost everyone was a beginner buying their first lapidary saw. The only Covington I've owned was an 8" I bought used at Cloud's one year. Someone had ground out the sump divider and it had no power feed. I intended to use it as an oil trim saw. I mounted it on a board, installed a new blade and belt. Someone came by while I was finishing it up and (like the Godfather) made me an offer I couldn't refuse. All in all, I think the Covington 10" is a good saw.
