Lee, are you anti-plastic or have you had a bad experience with the Ameritool and High Tech saws? I hear only good reports on them.

It is funny that you mention that Lee. It was just today that I was told by a person whom I respect that the high tech was a good little machine as long as you don't intend to use it for hours at a time non stop. This person recommended the model J also and it is even less expensive. I think he said it was something to do with the motor being dc. I am not real clear on it.

Any variable speed saw will have a DC motor to allow the speed control. They will have a rectifier to allow use with standard AC voltage. I think the technical name is electronic gizmo.

I just ordered a model J with the vise from Dan over at Kingsley North. There are so many choices out there and it becomes really hard for a nube to make a choice. I was all set to get a High tech 6" with the vise for about $200.00 more figuring that if it where more money it must be better. I often tend to over compensate for my lack of knowledge about a given subject by choosing the more expensive model when making a purchase. The logic being that if it is more expensive it must have more and better features that I will probably need and appreciate when I become more educated. Unfortunately that was not always the case and I often wasted money. Fortunately for me I was dealing with Dan at Kingsley as opposed to one of the phone operators who just take the orders. He recommended the model J and saved me over $200.00. How refreshing. ;D Stu

Lee, are you anti-plastic or have you had a bad experience with the Ameritool and High Tech saws? I hear only good reports on them. Yes... on both questions. Having built and maintained manufacturing equipment, I am not a fan of anything that barely does the job, I have found that it's much better to put sturdy well built tools into the hands of beginners, or anyone for that matter. I have used a High Tech saw and it just feels cheap, I was OK with their flat lap but I like my old covington flat lap so much better. I don't have any personal experience using a saw from Ameritool but it's basically the same thing. I have no doubt that the lower cost machines probably work ok for a lot of people, I just don't reccomend them. Stu, excellent choice on the saw. It's a good saw and real easy to clean. Lee

The motor is 1750 but the pulley on the motor should be larger than the one on the saw to create a faster blade RPM. My 6 inch highland park runs about 2600 RPM with a 3 inch pulley on the motor and a 2 inch pulley on the blade. Pulleys can be changed to change blade speed. Lee

I did use one of the proslicer THIN blades on my LS-10 Lortone saw and it did fine for the little while it lasted. I was cutting Biggs Jasper and did not want to waste any. I made it through one 20# rock and threw the blade away. The MK blades I normally use will cut several hundred pounds before replacement. I use my 10" w a y more than the 18" though.

Greg, they put a Pro Slicer on their Rock Rascal for two reasons. One, both are made by same manufacturer. Second it is a low cost blade. .025" is not extremely thin and will work fine at 1725. When you get down to the paper thin blades you need faster rotation.
