I always have an early garden. But its been burnt up and long gone. Yall northern gardeners ought to have some good ones going.Show them, get me in the mood for my fall garden, hard to think about it when its 108 outside.

The bugs are killing everything in my garden. I guess it is time to take another picture out there. We harvested all the corn 2 weeks ago. Have harvested two large batches of green beans. First batch the beginning of July and second batch mid July. I need to pick another batch this weekend. I have harvested Jalapenos, parsley, pickling cucumbers, beets, turnips, peas, spinach, mustard greens, onions, (not very big though. Something was eating them) carrots, potatoes, pinto beans last Sat. and a few squash have survived. I am just now starting to get tomatoes that are not full of bugs. Had to throw all of them away until this past weekend when I started gettng some that are fine. I have lost zucchini, summer squash, pumpkins, butter nut squash, spaghetti squash, burpless cucumbers and now my cantelopes to wilt. (squash bugs). I have lots of watermelon on the vines but they need about 10 more days before the first is ripe...if the bugs leave them alone. At least I am learning what works and what doesn't here. Fran

Looking good yall,at least yall are gettin'something to eat.Fall gardening is sometimes the best garden in this area.Vegetables mature in cooler weather and have better flavor than those in the spring. But that all hinges on if it ever rains and the dang grasshoppers that have cleaned up my fall garden plants as soon as they come up the last two years.Drought, bugs, too wet,too dry , viruses, mildews, bugs, too much wind, too hot, deer, rabbits, and did I mention bugs? But aint it fun? ;D

yes, tell me about it!
I need new raised beds that are enclosed and easy for me to do the gardening in. Last garden I tended I ended up having to crawl to the door and just about did not get it open. Dang back puts a wrinkle in all my fun. I was laid up for a couple of weeks after that session of gardening so hubby forbid me to do anymore untill he gets my new raised beds built. There will be no stooping or bending with the new system he has planned so I can grow our own.

Is it just me or did anyone else notice that there is a really large hairy potato in that last pic?...lol. Great looking veggies, makes me wish I had a garden. I may be able to go to farmer's market this week so will get my veggie fix there, I hope.

Lost my squash and cucumbers to stink/squash bugs. Dawn soap won't kill them or run them off. We finally broke down and got some 7 dust to protect the tomatoes. So, it won't be an organic garden this year. Got the corn in last week. Good thing because it is all dried up now(quit watering) Potatoes didn't make. The sweet potatoes are doing great, though. got plenty of broccoli and the cauliflower is still making. Got several batches of beets, but the bugs have now got the leaves so will have to get them up. Carrots are still making and the Romaine lettuce is still surprising me as it is still making, although it is about 2 foot stalks. Only have about 6 that made it through the heat, but it is still producing leaves and I pick them about once a week. Ken

Ken,sometimes it just comes down to do a little dusting with Sevin or something to save it. I'm not usually bothered with any thing but grasshoppers and just have to coexist with them,If I would kill them, more would move in from the pastures, especially when the hay crop is cut and then they swarm on me.But everything is usually made by then.

It has been a real trial with the bugs this year! Right now, my garden has been invaded with sand wasps. They catch cicadas and drag them into their hole and lay an egg on it so I guess they are not all bad, as long as they don't come after me. This one is not being stepped on. It is trying to go under my shoe. These beans may look terrible but they are not. They are best if left to dry on the vines and when the leaves start falling off, it is time to harvest, which is what I did yesterday. Cranberry beans, kidney beans and pinto beans. The tomatoes are out of control and the deer just started jumping the fence and trouncing through them. They broke an edge with the fishing line so there is no stopping them now. I have already harvested the good tomatoes and there are a lot of little green ones now but it is hard to get into this mess! I planted them 5 feet apart and you can't even tell! This basil, I think it is Greek, is very fragrant and ready to harvest. I just dried a huge amount of parsley last Saturday along with dill. Harvested a half bushel basket full of Jalapenos yesterday. Even the bugs are starting to eat them! The cantalope died last week from wilt so I only got a few melons off them before they were gone. The last hold outs are my watermelons. I bought the ones that are 6-8 pounds and round but I guess there were some rogue seeds in there. I also have long ones that get to about 20-25 lbs so I am not sure what they are. We picked a round one Friday and it was wonderful! Just picked a long one but haven't cut into it yet. This unrecognizable mass is Collard greens. I have left them to attract the insects away from everything else since the other methods, including pesticides didn't seem to work so well. Now, it is more or less, just clean up. Fran

What a fine lush garden there Fran. From your last post I pictured the bugs having your plants ate down to stem skeletons.Had to get used to the blast of green color as my eyes had to readjust from the shades of brown here.Happy eatin'!

When I lived in North Dakota,I had a huge garden(1/2 acre)..Since moving here I tried to make it by going to the farmers markets to just buy the produce..LOL..Not working good,so I ripped up our backyard lawn and am going to put it all into a veggie garden....... So next spring I'm ready to plant and grow again(I miss it)....
