Not sure where I got this material. Maybe some red Jasp/Agate with some unknown black, softer, less polish-able material that makes the black spots? Another photo with two cabs made from slabettes I got from Snuffy, petrified palmwood and I think Wild Horse picture jasper. Sorry for bad picture sizing but Photobucket is not allowing me to resize photos right now, I've tried for over half an hour and I just have to give up.

That other thing you have is called a dime.
You can get it anywhere where people spend cash. It's like a penny, but actually slightly more useful, but not as much as it used to be.
It's worth about 10 cents. Before 1964 they were over 95% silver. Now they aren't worth a dime.
Years ago there used to be things called 'five and dime stores' but they never sold dimes, which made the name kind of funny. Now we call these stores .99 cent stores, and the stuff they carry is pretty much cr*p.
Also, when people told the police where a wanted man was hiding, it was said they 'dropped a dime' on someone. This was because there used to be things called phone booths. These were strange little rooms with an extremely large metal phone bolted to the wall that cost a dime to use. You actually put the dime in a little slot (the dropping part) and then you had to spin a little wheel to reach the person you wanted to call. Really barbaric in my opinion.
Another confusing phrase was "a dime a dozen", since dimes were 10 cents and a dozen (unless you were a baker) were 12 items. It was used in such a way as "Bad politicians are a dime a dozen in the senate".
I hope I helped you a bit with that other object you pictured.
By the way, that crazy lace is not a dime a dozen.

Lowell, you've been sniffing the cerium I'm guessing. I remember going to the neighborhood market for an ice cream. A dime a scoop and they had all three flavors (chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry). Next door was a five and dime. Except for candy nothing there cost either a nickle or a dime. Kind of like the dollar store where everything costs more than a dollar. That was a few years ago.

Heh. Actually, there was nothing that cost a dime in New Orleans, but phone calls were only a nickel. It became sort of a publicity stunt so they could never raise the price. I think in the 21st century they are now 25cents but the point is moot since everyone now has a cell phone...

Hey we've got a lot of "dime a dozen" politicians. We also got a "Pig in a poke" president but now "The cat is out of the bag" and everyone knows we're " up the creek without a paddle" and don't have a " snowball's chance in Hell" because the "penny we saved is not a penny earned" because a penny is now so worthless the government would like to discontinue pennies and a dollar is barely worth pennies. So have a good Friday all y'all and remember, Don't squat with yer spurs on or kick a cow chip on a hot day....Mel
PS: very nice set of cabs *L*

I'll tell one more sad/funny story about small coins. Some of the guys in the New Orleans area decided to speculate in the price of copper. So they would collect old copper pennies. Guy at the coin shop told me he knew of guys who are holding "tons" of copper pennies. Trouble is, some law got passed in the dead of night in 2006, that you can no longer melt coins. It's OK for me, since I was there selling "junk silver" and it still sells close to melt. However, the copper guys can't sell, even though the cost of the copper has gone up 8 times face value. Yikes!!!
One more note, when the price of silver is a little more reasonable, I sure would like to set that palmwood piece in a ring or pendant for myself, as petrified palmwood is the state fossil of Louisiana.

I just got home from a wonderful fish fry and sat down to read this and I can't stop laughing. This is a wonderful thread and Peachy you have a couple of beautiful cabs.
I do remember going to a little store I passed on the way to and from school, when we all walked to school, where we could go in and get a whole bag of loose candy for a dime. Then we would share the candy. Those were the good old days when it was safe for kids to play outside without someone watching them.
Thanks All, Tanya
