My wife, and I had just returned to the US on our boat to clear customs at Friday Harbor, Washington at daybreak when the skipper of the boat ahead of us asked if we had heard the news. I had noticed the customs officers were on the dock...........very unusual for a week day, and early morning. We had planned on taking family out for a few days then running home at our normal cruise of 17 knots. Family plans changed, and we did a 35 knot run home. Since 'home' is acrost the bay for the Naval shipyard where I worked, turning into the bay at 35 knots on a course directly toward a Navy destroyer gave us (me anyway) a heart stopping moment when I noticed the weapons radar had locked on to us....wife was at the helm, and did not quite understand the order, and I did order her to turn the boat. "turn the f**king boat" did the trick spoken loudly, This caused the radar to resumes rotating, much to my relief. The destroyer was sitting in a direct line with out boats slip. Woody

I was just getting out of bed when my neighbor called me and told me to turn the TV on. I asked her why and she said just turn it on, you're not gonna believe this. When I turned it on I remember distinctly Peter Jennings (ABC News) was talking about how a plane had hit one of the towers at the World Trade Center in NYC. As he was talking the second plane hit the building and I was stunned. I couldn't stop watching the coverage it was unreal. I stood in front of the TV and watched as the towers collapsed one after the other. I was in shock. After a few hours I had to turn the TV off and take a break from watching. It was so shocking and felt personal even though I was not involved nor did I know anyone who was there. It was such an emotional experience. The next day I remember seeing more of the coverage and it was still unreal. I remember within a few days they showed members of Congress on the Capital steps singing God Bless America. It was so moving.

I was at home (no t.v.) preparing for a hearing in another county and my secretary called me to tell me what was going on. I had a mother near D.C. and a cousin who does contract work for the Wall Street Journal office in the towers. Mother was okay; cousin unreachable.
I remember sitting listening to the judge and baliffs discussing endlessly what happened, what should happen, what could happen. All I wanted to do was leave and find my cousin. I finally walked out.
I remember going home and watching the birds at the bird feeder and realizing that even if they spoke English or I spoke "chirp" I could never explain what had happened to them. They would never understand, their world was so different. I remember envying their world.
I remember anger and sadness, and an abiding hope that there would not be violence against others from the Middle East simply because of their nationality. I remember taking comfort at how little violence there was.
I remember reaching my aunt, who was with a medical mission group in Africa and finding out indirectly that my cousin was okay.
Much later, joining my cousin in NY, I remember her pointing at the space where the towers used to be and her saying that the rest of the country was appalled, but New Yorkers were reminded every day when looking at the space where the towers used to be.
And I remember my friend, an ATF agent, describing the search for bodies at the Pentagon.

I was roofing a house in Bismarck,North Dakota, the owner came out and told us that the towers were hit.... This guy also worked at the airport there, told us of all the planes being growned-all sizes, all shapes....We also watched the town freakin' out by buying gasoline, food and water-total mess........Both "Airbases" were on red alert, backing traffic up for miles!!!! Also a tad of information from some of my friends on military bases...They arrested and spotted many people in different states and bases, jumping the fences to get on base(same day crashes happened)-for what I haven't a clue,no more info was ever given out and it was never published in any newspapers..... I lived on the American and Canadain border than, the patrols were maxed out-totally crazy!!!! Stayed that way for a good three years before it feathered down a bit..
