Just wanted to drop by and say HI to everyone. LOVE the site. My wife got me a tumbler off of free cycle ( I had one when I was child many many life times ago) but it's a cheap one. So I thought I would re-try my hand at it. Man did I forget a ton of stuff, anyways I went and got some river rock and started it, who would have known that just any ol rock couldn't be polished LOL. But hey will see how they turn out. It came with enough grit to do one barrel, well so they say. Anyways on step 2 now not sure how they will turn out but we'll see. After doing some net search and reading and reading and yet more reading I find I will probably need to order a new tumbler and at least 5lb's of each grit LOL.
I live in Wyoming so from what I have read on the net and here I shouldn't have much trouble finding raw material to work with, the state geo site says we have lots of stuff. And I found a pdf file here that has a county by count list of what can be found (thanks for whoever put that up sorry don't remember your name)
So I look forward to getting to know some of you and posting some pictures of my attempts at this hobby.
I have no idea what I am going to do with them once I get the polished LOL, but one step at a time. Let me get too where I can say I polish them first then worry about what to do with them LOL
OH forget my name is James, duh.
Thanks for reading,
James

Hi James, and welcome.
The grit that came with your tumbler with not be enough for the rough grind - you will need much more. You'll probably have enough for the successive steps.

Thanks for the welcomes
I live in Laramie. It's about 45 miles west of Cheyenne not far from CO. Not sure I can be called a rock hound yet, more like a rock puppy ;D
And yes I have learned that the step 1 grit I had wasn't enough but went ahead and moved to step 2 anyways. Seeing as it was river rock and already rounded for the most part.
I did pick up some rocks from Elk Mountain the other day, not sure if they will polish or not . Can I post a picture and y'all tell me if they will or not?
James

Post away James. We love pics. Someone should be able to tell you what you have, and if they'll polish.

try going to iron mtn area. Lots of different agates and of course it is a kimberlite pipe which is noted to be diamondnific. Be careful lsat time I was there it was really hard to get in as almost all access is through private property. If you do find a good way in let me know as I have several people that want to go there again. Just think clear extra hard rocks !!! wow.

Welcome to RTH James!!
I lived on a ranch in Centennial for a few years as a child, I remember the 30 minute drive into Laramie each month for a truck load of groceries. The junior high and high school was in Laramie too...

Welcome, been to Wyoming often, like it there(I like it because the population is small)...As for your tumbled rocks,I use clear glass vases to display my stuff or just use the mind to explore other options.......... Great trading material too.......

Mr James !! Welcome to the RTH ! A great place for any info about lapidary !! I was born down the road from Laramie back many years ago in Cheyenne. My folks were from the South so after I was born they moved back to Alabama. I live in western Georgia now. Love going back to Wyoming on vacations. Have not been back since June of '94. Getting the urge to return very badly. Again welcome to the board.

Dicky,
Looked up Iron mnt and found this
"Many of the kimberlites, a rock type that has been successfully mined for diamonds, are infested with rattlesnakes. Some days you can walk across them and hear the rattlesnakes rattle in their holes under your feet," geologist Dan Hausel said. "It really keeps your eyes peeled to the ground."
So probably not going to happen LOL
