A powerful solar eruption is expected to blast a stream of charged particles toward Earth tomorrow (Jan. 24), as the strongest radiation storm since 2005 rages on the sun. Expected to hit Earth tomorrow at around 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT) www.space.com/14319-huge-solar-eruption-sparks-radiation-storm.htmlPerhaps Geoff will get a heavy-duty northern lights show! And maybe take pics for us to see... Bill

Hmmmm, forecast says it should be clear in the morning so maybe i will have to get up a little early and see if there are any northern lights around here. Supposed to arrive about 6am my time and isn't really light until about 7:30 so i may get a chance for some pics here.

Ah! It's been so long since I've had a good proton shower! Nothing quite like having those little critters blast through the ole synapses at a bazillion miles an hour to leave one feeling refreshed and renewed!!! Aurora photos would be the fuzzy warm terry towel to such a cathartic galactic event!!!!! We're too far South here in Upstate/Southern NY. Please!!!! :-)

Well, i got up nice and early and went outside to see nothing but pitch black skies, no stars or anything. Looks like the clouds blew in overnight but then cleared up again around noon. Too bad i wasn't able to get any northern lights pics but since i was up so early it gave me lots of time to work on my sphere machine and finally get it done.

Photo of the solar flare erupting on the Sun's northeastern hemisphere. Here is what it looked like in Norway. And from space

Well, looks like i got lucky tonight and was able to catch a bit of the light show. I probably could have got some better shots if i climed the mountain since they seemed to be much brighter behind it but i couldn't work up the ambition to go up tonight. I haven't taken pics of the northern lights before so i think these turned out pretty good for my first try. And the first pic i will post here is actually the 10,000 picture i have taken with this camera since i bought it about two years ago. Not a bad pic for the milestone 10,000. These were taken about 15 minutes ago off my front doorstep. I'm gonna warm up for a bit and might go back out to get some more if it keeps up. Edit to add: Yupp, still going on and showing some great red colors.

Thanks for posting Sampson! I'm envious! I saw the aurora in Fairbanks one year. It was fantastic.
I was hoping to see the aurora, but I don't think it made it this far south, and as always happens here, it was overcast.
