khara - I remembered to go look at ours. Vince just had it sitting in the pan. No screening or mesh. I don't recall him ever having a problem, but some screen wouldn't hurt anything. Doesn't have to be pretty; just needs to work.

hummingbirdstones Oh great, thank you. I appreciate your doing that. A lot of little details to work out when doing something for the first time.

Hey khara take a look at THIS. Not sure how well the oil will flow through the screen. The plastic screen baskets for evap cooler pumps (your pump is the same general shape and construction) have larger holes. My first thought was a plastic basket with a finer screen basket like this on inside. You just need to make darn sure the oil can flow through quickly enough. Just in case anyone is looking at that pump in the Amazon link that shermlock provided the description is horrible. It's not AC/DC and it's not a diaphragm pump!

rockbrain Thank you for this. After Peruano replied I went down the internet rabbit hole of research but finally with some helpful search terms. The rigid basket wouldn't fit unless I hand-make one. So then I found pictures like this: So I started researching mesh. I couldn't find any sheets like this to zip tie around the pump. But then that search somehow got me to "swim bags" and then pool pumps and then finally mesh pump bags! I ordered these www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW3JWJ13?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 to try but it's good to see you have the same idea. It's nice too that it's a 2-pack, I'll use one for my cabber pump. Still waiting for it to arrive so I can do some tests. I'm looking forward to doing some tests, like you said to ensure that the oil can flow easily through the mesh.

Doesn't have to be pretty; just needs to work. To be fair, that describes me fairly well. Also, I'm glad this was posted because I was wondering the same thing re: straining debris. Seems like RTH people know the answers before I even ask the question.
