PS: These were polished in 1970 in a rotory tumbler.
Not sure if that would have any effect on the staining but I'm no expert.

I use Iron Out. Works. Even removed the rust from our quartz stone kitchen counters. I had left a wet cast iron skillet sitting there a few days....

I think the iron in your slabs was already there, it just hadn't oxidized yet. Remember, agates were formed before there was much oxygen in the air or water. Iron was dissolved in water then, and did not precipitate out as iron oxide until the emergence of cyanobacteria. Five plus months in water caused the iron in your slabs to oxidize. Acid will wash iron oxide off things, and rinse it out of fractures. What you're trying to do however, is to re-dissolve the iron oxide, and leach it out of the chalcedony. I have no idea if it can be done, but if it can, it doesn't seem like it would be a very quick process.
