You forgot that Reagan made the entire nation feel good about itself again. That is priceless.

I'm on the fence about HUD... not sure that we need that either. I am not on the fence about the Dept of Education AT ALL. One thing they do is collect data on how education compares from state to state. I can think of a lot of doomsday scenerios for education left in the hands of individual states. For example, say someday, Scientologists (or muslims, or atheists, or whatever) become dominant in a state, and want to teach a particular religious agenda (or lack of). Without a Federal Standard or any oversight, they can conceivably deny certain levels of education to certain groups, ie., Christians. The whole grade K-12 system is a Federal system. Why can't Christians be given only grade 1-5 education? In states with NO state income tax (like Florida), the only funding would come from local property taxes for schools. It's very easy to see that they may not be sufficient income to educate students through 12 grade. So what becomes the criteria? No more doctors, no more scientists out of that area? What if the state could only afford to fund education through grade 6, and then from that point, you have to pay? So brilliant children that could be tomorrow's Einsteins get stopped at a 6th grade education because their families are poor? Again, this is out there, but when you take away standards, that gaping hole can be filled by almost anything. These are currently inconcievable scenerios, but ONLY because we have Federal standards. With zero regulation for states educations, there is no reason it can't happen. Those who can teach, teach. Those who can't, collect data.

And those who can't do either come up with wild theories:).

I am on the fence about government, not sure we need any at all anymore.
After reading this thread I think that I can now welcome advanced alzheimers.
Wish it would hurry up and get here, right now I can still remember some stuff, just can't remember which ones.
I better go box up some rocks before I forget who they go to.....................Tony

You forgot that Reagan made the entire nation feel good about itself again. That is priceless. I couldn't agree with you more. Our country was heading on a downward spiral but he somehow managed to bring us back. Of course, taking on the Big Bear certainly helped.

Wow! bein gone for a week and I'm GLAD nothing has changed. keep it up, very entertaining and informative. Romney"s off mic thingy kinda pulls no weight. Does this reporter have any witness? Kind of a he said she said argument. Barry's comments were caught live on tape. Big difference! Thanks for the clip about Bob. I like Beckel, he kinda reminds of Rich. ;D

Parfive, you could make a list of good and bad for every President, some better some worse. We all pay taxes in the end, and we don't get to decide what those taxes get spent on anyway.
But here's a quote that applies to Reagan, and it's why we will remember him, most of us very fondly, forever: "People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel"
There are very very few Presidents you can say that about... JFK did some truly stupid stupid things in his Presidency, almost started WWIII, had affairs left and right during an era where morality really mattered politically, attempted assassination of a foreign head of state, blah blah... but that quote applies to him also. People don't always REMEMBER the things you do, but both men pulled this nation together... and at the end of the day, it's all that matters.
I think I'm getting advanced alzheimers... I told Tony I'd send him a box of something to look at and I FORGOT!!!

There you go again. “... and at the end of the day, it's all that matters.” Ah!! So that’s why deficits didn’t matter. ;D

Of course it didn't matter. Clinton followed and fixed it didn't he? Then Bush wrecked it again. So now Obama has to fix it, and when we get rid of the Repugs in Congress, he can clean it all up for the next Republican Pres to mess up again.
Hopefully we get a GOOD Republican Prez. I won't hold my breath for another Reagan, he was pretty unique... but I can settle for Jeb Bush, who was THE BEST Florida Governor EVER (I think he was adopted myself, because he bears 0 resemblance to George).
Since when have you not seen this cycle repeat in the last 200 years? The deficit matters NOW. And when Obama fixes it, it won't matter 4 years from now:). It all works out:).

Let’s see . . .
Clinton was impeached over a blowjob. (yeah, yeah, I know what the charges were)
They wanna impeach Obama for a birth certificate.
And Reagan get’s a free pass for Marcos’ money and Iran-Contra.
Cause some had a Happy Ending.
Okee doke.

? The deficit matters NOW. And when Obama fixes it, it won't matter 4 years from now:). It all works out:). Here is Obama plan to "fix" the deficit in action. The $5 Trillion Man: Debt Has Increased Under Obama by $5,027,761,476,484.56 During the full eight years that George W. Bush served as president, the federal government's debt increased by $4,899,100,310,608.44.The $5,027,761,476,484.56 in additional debt that the U.S. government has taken on during the 39 months that Obama has been president is more debt than the federal government accumulated in the first 219 years of the Republic. cnsnews.com/news/article/5-trillion-man-debt-has-increased-under-obama-502776147648456

I see that every time, and I find it very amusing. Let me ask you what happens when you put $100 on your credit card... but can only pay $10? Oh. Your balance of $90 carries forward and INTEREST is applied!
Next month, you put another $100 on the credit card, and can only pay $10.... you now owe... gasp... $180... plus interest!!
And the next month, you do the same thing.... except you don't put $100 on the credit card, you put the Iran war on the credit card! And you pay $10!
Now you owe $1 million dollars, and you pay $10 (remember, this is the federal gov't, their mandatory payment doesn't go up).
So THEN, you give all the rich people tax cuts! Now you can only pay $5 a month! And all that money gets put forward.
Tell me, without increasing your payment of $5, at the end of 8 years, you don't owe any money anymore?
When you do not increase your $5 payment, even if you chop what you add that month back to $100 instead of Iraq war, Afghan war, new subsidies, new loopholes, new costs (remember everyone's $300 check or whatever it was we all got from Bush), the BALANCE you owe is still what you owe.
And lo! it keeps piling on... EXPONENTIALLY... because... you are only paying $5, except NOW you owe a few trillion!
Of course Obama was going to have more debt than Bush, he INHERITED not only the debt, but every stimulus that was in progress from Bush.
That he owes this coming in doesn't mean it wasn't Bush's debt, or that new debt wasn't because of what Bush did. There's way more than that... starting with, when he came in, he needed to get the economy moving again.
So he buys new clothes, gets a haircut, fixes his broken AC so he's not sweating like a pig and smelling bad at interviews, and invests money in a full tank of gas... to try to get a new job (stimulus, bank bailout, auto bailout)... that provides more income.
Short term, it costs him more... but long term, if he succeeds, he's going to make more $$, so instead of $5, he can pay $10. That's what you do when you are down and out.... spend something to try to get something BETTER. You aren't going to go job hunting with no gas in your car?
Now if we could have increased income, we may have been back to paying $10, or even $15.
It was starting to work. The banks did NOT go under, taking every single person's savings and checking with it, stopping US business dead in its tracks financially (tell me, WHO pays for FDIC insurance, and would FDIC have the funds to cover a FULL RUN on the banks?). THAT was coming, I'm shocked Obama saved it. The AUTO industry did not go under, surely you haven't missed the grateful THANK YOU OBAMA!!!! from Michigan? Our auto industry is back! Its still slow, stinky, but it's OURS, and as long as the industry still exists, there is hope of turn around. If it doesn't exist, there's nothing to turn around, all those Americans go on unemployment (who pays for THAT?).
But then, the new REPUBLICAN Congress shot down the Jobs bill, and started ruining everything Obama was doing. Sort of like, pulling over the guy looking for a job with the new tank of gas. Sorry buddy, going to make you sit here for 3 hours while I lecture you about how to drive.
The Jobs Bill would have brought in more Revenue, because it would have began infrastructure repair that could have put people back to work (remember all those unemployed construction people, the LEGAL ones in Florida, when we threw out all the illegals who took their spending out of the economy?). But NOOOOOO!!! No job creation, that is against the new Republican party morals. NO ONE cares about jobs, we only care about the rich, the Middle Class can sit under the bus til we drive it away.
Remember last year's loss of AAA rating for the US as a nation? What do you think that did to our interest payments? No one seems to want to talk about that, but in the real world, if a bond drops from AAA to AA, it's worth much less. I'm not sure of the precise calculation.
Think what happens to your credit card interest rate when you miss a payment. It goes from what? 9% to 26% because you are no longer a premium customer and go on bad interest rate list? I doubt our interest doubled, but it sure did go up, thanks to the Republican Fillibuster!!! We LOST our AAA rating last year, because the Republican House refused to pass the budget. And after LOSING it, did they stand their ground? OF COURSE NOT. They passed a budget ANYWAY. So what was the point of all that sound and fury? Oh yah... so we could lose our AAA status, and accomplish the SAME BUDGET we would have anyway BEFORE we lost it. Fast thinkers those Republicans? No.
And NOW, we have the 30% Buffett rule about to be fillibustered. It is kinda symbolic, but to a dying man in a desert, 1 meager sip of water that we would normally run down the drain is quite a difference. It also opens a door to the Corporate 30% rule (that obviously isn't yet on the table but would instantly let us pay $10 a month again).
OF COURSE the deficit is going up, where else can it go if every time anyone comes up with a way to fix it, Congress says NO! THAT"S why we need to get RID of the Republicans in Congress!!
Hope that made sense. Gotta get some work done. I have way too much fun with you guys, it's killing my schedule!

Helen,
I find it VERY difficult to believe you are a Republican! You may have been at one time but you sure don't sound like one to me now.

Yeah, me too, especially with lines such as "So now Obama has to fix it, and when we get rid of the Repugs in Congress, he can clean it all up for the next Republican Pres to mess up again."
although . . . You know how reformed smokers or converts to veganism are, perhaps the same applies to 'reformed Republicans' ( like I suspect Charlie is )

Sheltie, I am NOT a Republican now. I am a REAGAN Republican. Back in the days when the Republican Party wasn't the party of lies and propaganda.
If we get rid of this Republican crew of crap in Congress, maybe NEXT election we'll actually get some real Republicans again. Ones who care about the USA, not a bunch of idiots who want to ensure their big business international corporate masters get ALL the cake, damned the nation.
