This will definitely help me out the next time I do some ob. You have a killer shine to your stones!

Krystee, I liked your tutorial enough that I just left some non-obsidian in 500 grit for several days. We shall see how they do, but you sure do make nice obsidian!

Thanks, Krystee. Last week, I had purchased enough for a small 3lbs barrel but have been hesitating on running them until I could find a tutorial. I think Connrock also posted one so I'll be using both. Thank you again. Paul

Shoot, now I have to get some obsidian. I should have started this hobby a long time ago. I just got a tumbler for Christmas and already have several years worth of rocks in my basement. How will I ever decide what to do next?

The document is not crisp although it is somewhat readable in Adobe Digital Editions. What causes that? Frustrating. I think there is a formatting issue, as it doesn't call up the correct title either. It calls it "Microsoft Word Obsidian Tumbling Recipe" so if you are looking for "Obsidian" to be the first word in the title you don't find it. Pretty sure this is a wrong step in the formatting method but I haven't yet been able to make a decent PDF either so I can't say 100 % for certain what's going on. If I find out I'll let you know how to fix it.

Thanks Krystee. This will sure help me. You did a fine job on the tutorial. I have two chunks of Obsidian and not sure how I can break it up. Each chunk is 10 or 12 lbs. James

The name of the pdf is "Obsidian Tumbling Recipe" but I did create it originally in Word. Bizarre........

Krystee, wouldn't it speed up progress by a week to grind out all serious flaws before first rough grind?

James, when I break up the obsidian with a chisel and hammer or a rock pick, I put it in a gallon zip lock bag first to keep the glass shards from flying up and cutting me. It cuts through the bags pretty quick so I might go through 4 bags to break up one rock.
John, I'm sure you would agree that grinding before the first rough on agates and jaspers would speed up the process by a month or more! I think it's unnecessary on obsidian though. Obsidian grinds so fast that 10 days in the rough will usually give you a pretty rounded rock with very little flaws left. On the batch that I used for the tutorial I only spent a few seconds per rock to remove the remaining flaws. Some had cracks/fractures that I put back into the tumbler for the next rough. I probably could save some time though by re-breaking those rocks on their fracture line as some of the fractures were pretty deep!
By the way..... I LOVE YOUR OMG2 POLISH! This was my first time using it instead of my regular 3 to 4 micron AO polish. All I can say is WOW! I noticed a difference in the reflection in the first few hours in polish! Usually I have to wait over night to see a difference. I only use 1/2 tsp so the bottle I got from you will probably last a year... but dang, will never go back to my old stuff! Thank you!!!

Size matters. No comparison between .3 and 3 micron. Glad you liked the polish. You sure got a nice polish on the obsidian.

Krystee, thank you so much for posting this! Excellent piece and you really explain things very clearly with it! We all have our own recipe's, I think, but we all learn something new from each others! I've picked up some great things to try out in this piece, on obsidian as well as my other rocks! Right now, I'm working on my first rough grind in the rotary of agates. I really haven't used the rotary much but intend to combine shortcut ideas and the vibe with it. I have worked with preforms with the vibe, but not using the rotary first. We will see how all of it turns out!
