I cut and face polished this Oco a few years back, and recently found it carefully wrapped in a box. This one contains a surprise. Perched on the quartz crystals are a couple sprays of dark, metalic looking needle like crystals. One spray can be seen in the right half. Yesterday I ordered a gemological microscope with digital camera. As soon as it arrives, I'll try to get pics of the crystals. ![](http://i907.photobucket.com/albums/ac274/jakesrocks/101E0491.jpg)

My eyes aren't what they used to be. Even with a 10X loupe I haven't been able to ID the crystals. Hopefully with the microscope and camera, I can bring them up on my computer screen for a better look. At least I'll be able to capture pics to share. If I had to make a wild guess, it would be rutile needles.

I have a piece of quartz with similar black crystals and a very knowledgeable man ID'd it as shoral turmaline. I do not know how many different black needle crystals there are out there but mine look really similar to yours. I will try to get a closeup photo and post it. Jim

Not at all like mine Jim. My crystals stand out from the crystals in an open display.

Don. I have a feeling that these may have stood out at one time but rolling around along with all these rocks here probably broke them off and wore down what is still there. You can see in mine that the quartz also filled in around some of them. If your geode would have continued filling in it probably would have filled in around them also. Yours are definitely prettier than mine. lol Jim

Brad Cross and Zeitner's Geodes book talks about these geodes and how some have small black needles of what they believe are goethite needles.
Don't know myself, but thought I'd drop that reference in.

Thanks Lowell. Kind of tired right now. I'll check out that possibility in the morning.
