shotgunner: I checked my snake books for both here and California and some varieties have a much more defined black head. Many of our Edwards Plateau sub varieties of snakes seem to be more muted in color. Much duller in coloration that the ones I'm used to seeing on the California or Arizona deserts. We also have the Plains Flat headed Snake here, another Tantilla, that sometimes has a bit of a black head but the margin on the rear of the black area is always concave rather than the convex margin in this specimen.....Mel

That is sure one itsy bitsy snakey, I doubt I would have even been able to see that one let alone catch it. Sheri, glad he was full and you didn't get bitten. Yikes!

Nice pic Jim!
I spent a lot of years in Georgia and we had snakes aplenty. A lot of ours were the poisonous kind and I had a lot of encounters with them. Fortunately never had a bite!
One summer we collected dozens of baby cotton mouths at our creek. Pretty stupid in hindsight.

Well our ranch plans for this weekend were sidelined by having been unknowingly exposed to hand, foot and mouth disease from a couple of nieces. There are kids all over at the ranch, so we didn't want to expose them. Kids are the main reason we have a standing bounty on rattlesnakes on the ranch there in Nebraska. I go out every summer to de-varmint the ranch, and in the process find-sometimes- dozens of rattlers. Here is one from a few years ago. Back Off by John Daharsh, on Flickr

I live in Iowa and I found a snake that looks almost exactly like a California Garter Snake but it stood up and shot white venom out of its mouth like a Cobra does I have tried looking for it on Google Yahoo etc. but haven't found anything on it.
