Hi. Been collecting from that location for over 25 years.... Some candy rock from that location is too porous to take a good shine, and some will shine like crazy.... Best shine for me is from diamond.

I leave most of mine at about 220 then scrub the dust out well - it's a lovely flat finish. I know that much of it will shine because my saw polished quite a bit (my pictures only include the creme of the psychedelic crop - there was a lot more from that cutting session). I polished that heart/core I'm showing with diamond - then reground it back to 220 - I just like that look.

Side note - for kicks I put a hand held dry sander (like you use to prep the porch before painting) to some of this and it took a funky wax paper sort of shine. Makes me wonder if you could burnish a shine on the more porous pieces simply by running it over dry leather with nothing on it (shiny side to the rock or it'll probably work more like a scoop, lol...) I have read, and believe, that anything can be polished to water-wet. I'm getting pretty good at this with some of the softer and porous rocks. Maybe months down the road, if I get good enough, I'll post some of my methods (and someone can post me some methods for troublesome harder rocks). It's mainly about pressure though - physics change at certain grit sizes with regards to angle, volume and velocity of attack with regard to grits, and the rigidity and pressure used to apply the media can lead to interesting results.
