I actually hadn't tried the wire from Art, so, for fun, I decided to try it by leaving the plastic coating on it and use colors for the theme of the U.S. 's Independence Day:
I like the look of it, but I think I'm going to have to strip the wire and redo the wrap. The plastic coating on it makes it slide around too much. (Plus, I don't think I did the loops quite long enough)

Pretty cool idea. You sure would not have to worry about loosing it. lol As far as the loops go, when you get to the end and before making the bail you can stretch out the loops and cut off any extra ones. From what I am seeing the loops on the back must be very narrow. I ended up with the same thing so I stretched them out and ended up cutting off two loops. Wasn't it fun. Jim

Just saw the question about the stone. I have a bunch of green stone but I do not remember any that shade of green or with that pattern in it. Do you know if it is agate or quartz? Jim

That looks pretty cool Alisha:<)) I think you're right about taking the coating off:<)) You see how the loops are twisted a little; you can straighten them out when they are still on the form by giving it a little twist back straight. Jim; The stone is probably the same thing as you find laying around over there. Not quartz or agate.

You may be right. There is a bunch of green stone around here that is not quartz as I know quartz and it is not agate. When you break it there is a little bit of a quartz look but the shiny areas are much smaller than in the quartz break. Jim

Hi Jim I hate to call it anything because there is'nt a known occurance here so I'll just say that I find some of the formation materials for it here like serpentine, and I cut them all, but some of this has all the qualities of the harder/tougher material.

I will get out and break a piece of it so you get a better idea of what I have. Picked up a lot of it before I knew what I was doing so now I have a lot of yard rocks that I do not need. lol Hard to break until you find the direction of cleavage. Jim

Great idea on the wire art. Very slick. Alisha, the colors on the obsidian came out nice! Paul

thanks Paul, I hope you try it out. Jim, The stuff I`m talking about doesn`t have a plane and when you force it to break, is a granular, shattered look. The fibrous interlocking nature of the material does this.

It sounds to me like you are talking about nephrite. Sampson from Canada (don't remember where) sent a stone to me so I could slab it on shares. He called it "jade like" and it is coal black. It cut and drilled like nephrite and when I did a ring break test with it it took a beating and would not break. Very tough stone. I just went back and checked and he is from "BC/ Alberta hills and valleys" so ya'll might be neighbors. I have not seen him on here for quite a while. I just went back and read your posts and (hitting my forehead with my hand) realized that I should have guessed nephrite before. I just went back and looked at all your photos and there is indeed some similarities to the Wyoming nephrite. Just because there is not a known occurrence there does not mean that it is not there. I have found several things here that people do not believe came from here. I have no doubt that if the black stone that sampson sent to me was tested it would fall into the nephrite family which is a very large family. Since I started making the rings and looking for nephrite/jade I have learned about several stones that are in the family but called something else. The blue G from hand-to-mouth mining is the last one and thulite is the one before that. If there is an abundance of that stone there maybe you should have it tested. The rewards may be way higher than the cost of having it tested. You may be able to send a piece to a university and get it tested for free. Jim

here`s one I made to try with an aluminum wire frame and lengthened the loops over the forms. I forgot that I was going to try double wrapping the loop wires on the frame and only did the first loop that way.

and this is the back, the stone rests against the frame in the front so it doesn't really need back support

if you should decide to post a second installment to this topic, you should show 1 of the more modern wrap styles being used. By modern, I mean a wrap where there are only a couple loops to hold the stone and the bindings/coils (I don't know the term for the wire wrapped around the main wire for looks.) and even show the reverse side so people can see where the work from both perspectives. ***EDIT*** Of course I've read the rest of the this and see where the backs are being dsplayed, wish all the wrappers here would do it more often... would be a bigger help to all who are trying to learn. ***/EDIT***
just my opinion, I think this tutorial is great and makes it look a lot easier than I thought to start wrapping!! Thanx for posting it!!

It appears the site has run out of attachment space and all of yours have disappeared from this thread. My posts have had to post them from another website. If the other website flames out, they will probably disappear too. Can you post them again? Thanks!

Posting out of Photobucket or Flicker or any other photo hosting site is most common.

Thanks for sharing. Only one small problem. I cannot view the pictures. I try and I get an error message about the board's attachment space being over it's limit.
