That means a heck of a lot to me coming from an accomplished perfectionist as yourself.
But I can't take all the credit. It looks impressive simply because its so different from what you have seen in China. Whats Chinese carving anyhow? Flowers, gods and saints, children and animals associated with superstitions? Virtually all of those things are imported and localized images, redone over and over again. So doing something different "Westernized" is bound to stand out even if its not of " First class" quality.
I beg to differ on this statement. I will agree that a lot of the Chinese is the same thing over and over but it is still incredible work. Where I differ is a friend in China carves large bamboo and he carves a lot of the same things as you. Mice and lizards that you do not see in the other Chinese carvings. I will agree that you have not quite reached the point he has but you are so close that it is getting difficult to differentiate. He has an advantage because he is working with bamboo and can put some incredible detail into his work that is not possible to do in stone without it breaking. You will end up being a master simply because you feel that your work is never good enough. That mentality will make you get better and better.
Another thing that I disagree on is me being an accomplished perfectionist. I would have a hard time being a pimple on a good carvers butt. lol You surpassed me a long time ago. It looks like the VA is not going to do anything about my neck so my carving days may be over. Either that or I work no more than 30 minutes a day.
