I have a bunch of pyrite and this sounds like a way to add appeal to it. Will try it and see if it works on mine. Brenda

Thanks to Shotgunner for posting the pic's of his spheres, it got me motivated. Here is a sphere from the material above, the blue patina is only on the surface and sands off very easily. Here is the sphere at a 1000 grit pre-polish. I then soaked it in vinegar for a few days to get the blue patina. For some odd reason it would not change colors, then I found this link on mindat that said place some scrap copper wire in the solution. www.mindat.org/forum.php?read,19,180405,182061 After one night it changed colors, I may have left it in too long, it was a bit more purple then I wanted. But, the wife loves it the way it is. :-) Thanks for looking, Tim I did not remember that post. That is freeking killer! wow!

Put it under a black light and see what colors you get off of it............

I wish I could put it under a UV light, I gave the sphere to the mine owner to keep him happy so that I can get a return trip. My wife has been squaking about ever since, apparently it is the only rock in the house that she would notice if it was gone. :-)

Holy crap! I missed this thread! That is beautiful! I have a 40 gal bucket full of pyrite in the shop... I can't wait to get home and play this weekend! Awesome sphere!

'peacock' may just refer to the colouration, but I recall that this is a pet-name for bornite - iron-copper sulphide. The vinegar is likely to encourage the copper to swap places with some of the iron in the pyrite FeS2 but on its own won't do so - since there is no copper in vinegar (or you're buying it in the wrong shop!). Left to do its thing, it would probably work right through but it depends on the sample for how long that would take ...
