I have seen some green that was natural -- from Egypt when a meteor hit/landed and melted some of the sand there , they carved their scarab's from it and you can still find pieces over there now ( would of had the same heat as a volcano) -- don't know if it has any black around the edges or not

Lightning formed glass is called fulgerites I think, not obsidian made from lightning. My wife beads and years ago "strawberry quartz" was all the rage. It was a man altered, "enhanced" type bead like most of the low cost carnelian beads. It was amazing how many dealers had no idea it was not natural. And then there is the "black onyx" which occur no where naturally and "magnetic hematite". And on and on.

The one from Egypt could be a Tektite, natural glass as well. I have some in black but they also come in other colors including green. A green tektite is on my wish list as well as a meteorite and a fulgurite, I find them all fascinating. I did buy some stones and found out later that they were color enhanced, a real disappointment to me. Magnetic Hematite I do love as magnets. Dora

Obsidian is molten lava, spewed out of a volcano and is cooled very quickly. It breaks in shards, can be worked to make very sharp tools. In fact, some surgeons prefer using an obsidian scapel over stainless steel. It's the minerals in the lava that give obsidian any color. Sunlight will catch the minerals in a certain direction and a "sheen" will be visible. Obsidian is called volcanic glass and, if you want to find out why, take a 10 pound piece and drop it on the cement from 10 or 15 feet and listen to it shatter. It sounds like a big window just broke. Mandmade glass is made from silica(sand) with limestone and other minerals which are added for different colors. These ingredients are put in a kiln and allowed to become molten, at which time they are worked into different shapes. These sellers on Ebay or at Gem Faires are out to make a buck on novice jewelers and create names for the beads that are just plain glass, or stones that have been dyed. One of my pet peeves is people that make up names for stones and sell them to jewelry designers.
Okay, off my soapbox!

Yes, one of my pet peeves, too. As you said, man-made glass is different stuff than the natural rock. Both are non-crystaline, but artificial glass has additives to allow it to melt at low temperatures (compared to the temps in a volcano), additives to keep it amorphous, additives to color it, etc. Some huge scams (such as "Andara obsidian") have been run for some time that pass off common glass as natural obsidian.

Sorry Daniel. My initial thoughts (I'm sure you received them) were sent before I realized you were funning us. I think?

Sorry Daniel. My initial thoughts (I'm sure you received them) were sent before I realized you were funning us. I think? No John, I didn't get your message. I guess that settles the question. Blue glass is not obsidian. Not even blue art glass.

then again, if you think obsidian really activates your chakras or facilitates telepathic awareness, I certainly wouldn't try to tell you the glass ones couldn't do the same...
