Howdy folks, I was asked by my wife to make up just a tiny showcase of cabs for one of her clubs that has a little show displaying the hobbies of folks in our little community. They had a show last year and I gave her a case to display and it turned out to be the only example of lapidary art so folks wanted to see some again this year. Folks seem to be most interested in stuff you'd see here at Texas shows or find here in Texas, so I'm displaying a few of my cabs of materials from Texas and adjacent Mexico. Here a flash snapshot. Thanks for looking.....Mel

John: I agree Royal Imperial looks a lot like Bruneau Jasper. Comes in many more colors though and the genesis appears very different. Bruneau comes from what are basically T-eggs and the Imperial for all intents and purposes, appears like flint/chert nodules in it's rough state, even to having the softer cortex on the outside. Both are high on my list of favorites to cab....Mel

Really nice display, Mel, and a great idea for local stones!!! I can't get over the number of local rocks, or the diversity of what you have there!!!

Wow, what great material! Must be nice to just walk out in the back yard and get a new flat rate box full anytime you want it, lol. No wonder you left piles of rock when you moved. You didn't need to take it all with you Hey, Mel, I've been using 3m tape with my roofing nails and it works great!! Especially for small, or fragile stones, or stuff I don't want to put in Acetone, like Fordite. Fordite really doesn't like acetone, lol. Thanks for the great idea!! Tony

Tony: Glad the tape worked out well for you. I love the stuff and in areas of changing temperature like my shop, it is really superior to dopping wax.
John: Yep the Royal Imperial Jasper is even expensive when you buy rough in bulk. I looked at fifty pound bags at Quartzite and it was still over $10 per pound. I think closer to $15, if I'm remembering correctly. The other problems are, many of the little nodules are fractured and many are solids with no orbs. Also most are earthtones with mainly browns, grays etc. Plus the shapes are odd and most nodules small so they are hard to vice up for slabbing. It is one of the porcelain jaspers so takes a wonderful polish but if you figure the final per pound cost of rough ( probably upwards of $30 per pound for the good nodules), you are probably better off purchasing proven slabs for cabbing because then you now they are fracture free, have orbs and a known color pattern.....Mel
