Ok rock people. This is my plan for the weekend. Doing a big loop of Agate, Jasper, Pet Wood, Flint, and Fossils. Grand finale in Three Rivers for chalcedony. Or maybe I'll start there and go the other way. Whatever, this is the route. Any suggestions? goo.gl/maps/afrwS

Ok, I'm going to do Three Rivers first. Drive there (3hrs) Friday night. Do Three Rivers thru Llano Saturday, then drive to LaGrange Saturday night. Then do La Grange thru Onalaska Sunday

northwest up the rio grand is Woodward Ranch. They are selling but may still allow some collecting. Kinda far from your triangular target area tho'.
When you are in Austin I have a friend that can put you on Georgetown Flint. They use it for roadside berm material. No digging required!

I like all the gravel roads in the triangle drawn between Simmons, Three Rivers and George West. My buddy gets gravel from La Grange for landscaping purposes and while it sometimes has water worn pet wood and palm, to me it does not seem as fruitful as the gravel in the roads in the aforementioned triangle, many of which are loaded with good wood including about 10% palm, some agates and jasper.
Bandera area as some good fossils. Devine is AG country and not much around there. Llano is granite country and of course has llanoite. Most the hill country section is just fossils, chert ( flint) and limestone.Mel

If I were you - and I'm obviously not - the two places I would hound in TX (I'm a Texan) would be SW (Woodward, Ritchie and Stilwell Ranches) and east TX (numerous places) for pet wood. Most of the rest of the state is pretty barren for decent rocks. We use flint around here (I live in Georgetown) for common landscape rock. Kinda like the Oregonians use obsidian. In other words, they pretty much ignore it. Good luck hounding. I just noticed you were planning on being in Llano. Be SURE you go to Cooper's for BBQ! Simply the best around.

Thanks guys. I emailed Woodward and haven't received a response. I may still go that way next weekend. I'd love to go to Van Horn and get some of my agate Only problem is school goes till 4pm Friday, and starts 7am Monday. So I don't have a lot of time.

The ranch is up for sale so they may have stopped the rock hunting!

Got an email back from Jan at Woodward, they have hunters out there right now, so I can't go this weekend. Se said after the 10th I can, so I'll see how everything plays out. I'd be super excited to go there.

Alright. This is the route. I cut out Onalaska, even though I'd like to get some black palm wood. The extra 3 hours isn't worth it. Texas road trip

From what I've read, it takes a lot of time.

Geoff when you leave LaGrange and head to Austin you`ll be on Hwy. 71. Just west of LaGrange is Smithville. Just a few miles down the road. There is a rock shop there run by a lady named Lorene. It`s in a small brown brick strip center on the right with a small sign on the road. Great display of rocks and fossils and good prices too. Get her talking and you may be there all day though. And a few miles west of there is a Scenic Loop overlook. It is marked by blue signs. Down the hill on the backside you can collect different quartz rocks and jaspers and I`ve found a bit of pet wood there too. A lot of mystery rocks and artifacts are a possiblity too in the area. In Austin is a pretty good rock shop on IH-35 called Natures Treasures. Austin area is all chalk so no rock hunting here. Just fossils and artifacts if you can access any land by a creek or river.

Day one was a resounding success. I cut Freer and Laredo after spending three hours in Three Rivers. Just couldn't stop myself! Here's a preview: Got to my Facebook album to see more.
