I am still working off and on on an essay about seeing pictures in rock, including almost seeing pictures and doing something (cropping, carving, painting ....etc) to bring out the picture. I wrote a little about this in an older thread. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=50154As part of this I am collecting a few different examples of painting on rock. Not where someone covers the rock in paint and draws a dog or bird, but rather where a lot (if not most) of the rock is not covered, and the image incorporates the rock. I got some small houses painted on cliffs in picture jasper years ago, and have returned to this genre more recently. ... anyway, what do you see? Here is the back of a piece of polkadot agate that a craftswoman/artist who vends at the Kansas City show painted a scene on. I think she did a good job of utilizing the stone and harmonizing with lines and pattern in the stone. if anyone guess something close to what she painted, I will send them a good slab or nice small chunk of polkadot agate as a reward.

It sure doesn't look like any paint on this slab. she did a good job blending it in no the paint is on the other side, and the thick acrylic does show. I am using the back to have some chance for people to guess. I see the shape of the horse, but think whole slab and think landscape or broad vista.

From the back to the front: a meandering river that is just about to the fall area (black half-circle) in the low middle front.

Pat - I kind of see the waterfall in the center.
There are "hills" and the picture incorporates dots and moss and bits of color in the sky, as well as adding things you might find on rolling hill vistas.
I am going to get a pic of the back of an easier one she did. Maybe this one is too hard.

I agree. Putting a train on the hill ridge was easy. But seeing more distant snowcapped peaks in the dots and strands is very creative, and putting a bit of smoke coming form the train, suggesting the other natural strands are more dissipated bits of smoke - well that is similarly creative.
I like that the paint does not cover a lot of the rock, and many rock features are incorporated.

not this.
I have envisioned some scenes on some slabs, and I have talked with an artist about trying to paint them for me. I also hope to learn to paint fairly decent little rustic houses and barns so I can paint some on some picture jasper slabs... but something like this would be beyond me.

Wow--what a great Christmas thing to do. I just looked at this thread and had a thought in mind, but nothing like what it actually turned out to be.
Best to you, Daniel. I can certainly see why this has gained your interest.

What a brilliant use of pattern and and scene choice. I see painting done on slabs and a lot of them feel to overdone where it's just a painting on a rock. Her work is far from that. What great gift to have, share and inspire.
What a fun game too. I hope you do another one.
Merry Christmas Matt

Very neat painting! What a great job she did on the train!!!
On the back tho... I see a teeny bald eagle sitting on its cliff nest to the bottom right... looking at what might be its baby, or something... no clue what it looks like on the slab, but that's what I see in the photo of it:). That would have been a heck of a cab if it really looks like it does in the photo:).
