One thing I would offer: A former co-worker told of his dad tumbling in tires for many years, wore out several tires. Steve said the tires would inevitably wear through at night, leaving a huge trail of mess on the garage floor. Some sort of containment would likely be desirable. Looks like a nice setup you've built, anxious to see the results.

These are the pictures, I will post the stats in quick and good time. Aw heck, Load: mostly Jasper, piece of chert, some agate Wt: 12.5 lbs prior to loading, smidge over 9.5 coming out an incredible grind of 3 POUNDS on the load! the "gravel" worked out another 1/4 lb MIX: 1/2 gal. water, 3/4 cup of 60/90 silicon carbide Total time tire was rolling: 20 hours not too shabby, I am liking the tire more and more.

12.5 doesn't seem to be the capacity since I do almost that in my qt 12...unless you can get that fast of a reduction with that small of a load. Be interesting to find out. Other than that...is 30 lbs about right?

TOYO all terrain! U? Nah. ROY? AL? Not just any tire will do... Ba-dat-dat-ting! Be here all week folks...
12.5 load was rocks averaging 2-4 inches. NOTE the size of the rocks in the first picture, versus the last. When you DO tumble the big ones, they grind down fast BUT! they can and do carry up and out, thumping down beyond the load! the big ones will cause a good amount instability. I have tumbled a 25lb of small stuff, it is brutal grinding there too. I like to go 20lbs./one and a half to two and a half inch size/quarter to half cup grind, and split 2-3 times during the first 24 hours, the last 24 the grind pulverizes, the rock comes out ready for pre-polish. I am working on a tire for doing the polish. I plan to also see what the max load might be.
This is the discovery period. Next tires will have a permenent sealed ring attached to the bead, with the screws holding a large center disk. easy access, easy clean. I am see-sawing on studs inside to insure constant roll and mix. Slurry can accumulate FAST! tons of mud with a tire, I KID YOU NOT! plus I am tumbling jasper, some of it really wears hard, some really soft. 8 hours on one tumble and the slurry was thin clay that carried gravel and some larger stones all the way around w/o dropping. Had my hand inside after stopping, and a pebble dropped down landing on it. sticky thick mix! The cherts and agates grind well, grind fast, but slurry doesn't get sticky thick..
I don't let the tumbler go all night, I don't think I will let the tire get to a wear point that is disaterous... LOL!
Yeah the shoes are nice! They were also free, and require no other involvement from me once on the feet. Unlike the boots, all that lacing and tying and OY-VAY! heheheheheh

Hehehe... corny jokes anyone? What did the tire tumbler say to the rock? "Hop in baby, we can take a tumble!" What did the rock reply? Nothing, and it was a stony silence... ;D
