That is a cronoid stem...Looks like you have a death plate/sphere. It is a really cool sphere....John

Thanks for the info John! A death plate? ha ha...sounds cool. I have buckets of large pieces of this kind of rock, most of it has petoskey stone embedded in it. You never know what cool creature is gonna pop up in there....
I did a google search and came up with Crinoidal Limestone. That really looks like what I find with the exception of the petoskey stone inclusions

Petoskey stone is fossilised coral. So having coral and a sea lily which is the crinoid in the same sediment is not uncommon at all. It looks like you cut right down the stem of the crinoid vertically.

Yep, appears to be crinoidal limestone from the C.B Lambert ranch San Saba, Texas. The same ranch has crinoidal limestone in black, pink, and golden brown. I've been there on several collecting trips....Mel

Cool. That one makes it real easy to understand why a newcomer might think that was a soft bodied worm. I fish with worms that look almost like that.

Thanks for all the input. I pulled this one out of Lake Michigan off South Haven, MI.
