So a few hours ago I was out front washing and taking pictures of rocks from our trip yesterday. Christa came out to see what I was doing and next thing I know she let out a big gasp. I thought she was taken aback by how cool the rocks were, but when I looked her eyes were big and fixed on the tree in the park across the street. I looked over and was floored.. a huge bald eagle was up in the tree!! This isn't something you see everyday here.. in fact it's the first eagle either of us have ever seen in the city. An equally confused woodpecker flew in to get a closer look at him People saw us taking pictures and soon a crowd had gathered One couple showed up with their baby and the guy had a bag full of stuff. He pulled out some feathers and things and started doing a Native American dance around his family, then dropped to his knees, lit something, fanned it around with the feather and started chanting. It was very surreal So there you go.. strange but cool things afoot in Glendale! ;D

Must be the year for Bald Eagles. In the nearby town of Ramona, there's a pair nesting in a eucalyptus tree in what's known as the Ramona Grasslands.
It is the first time in San Diego County's known history that a pair has built a nest this close to San Diego. Jean

That is very cool! Bald Eagles are so amazing. Seeing the ceremonial dance must have been pretty cool to watch too!
There is a farm north of me that has a pair of nesting eagles every year. The farm grows pumpkins and offers eagle watching hay rides during October. It's beautiful watching the pair getting their nest ready every year. In the spring we will be going back up there to see the baby eaglets!

In our part of Washington State, it is a very unusual day for us to NOT see eagles. Woody

lol aren't bald eagles like sea gulls in Washington state?
Federal protection has been so throurgh for the raptors many if not all species are expandning their ranges. When I hunt waterfowl I see more raptors every year.
Nice images! Great story

Very cool. There are a lot of pairs in Oklahoma around the lakes but we don't see many around. Thanks for the pictures.

I see them on the St John's river in Florida and they are the thieves of the river. The ospreys leave shore, hover, dive, and catch their(a) fish. They are very good fisherman. Before the osprey reaches shore an eagle will leave shore and fly close and often bump the osprey till he drops his fish and pick it up when the fish hits the water.

Oh yeah Ive seen eagles do that to each other on the river. Ive seen them where they will be hanging upside down for a brief moment hanging onto the fish trying to get it from the other one. Funny looking. Its a sight. Also seen where 2 or 3 was trying to get a fish from another. They wont stop either until the eagle with the fish gets up into the tree.

Cool pics and story Brian. Can't help but wonder if neigbor hood animals are disappering since probably not many rabbits and squirrls running around in the city. I've seen a couple up here lately.

Thanks all! It must be cool to live in areas where you see these guys all the time, but considering this was an extremely rare sighting for here I think that makes it even cooler Jim there's a lake up near Flagstaff where the osprey are abundant. We've sat on the shore fishing and watched them circling way up in the air, then dive like a kamikaze to the lake and pluck out a nice trout. Kinda humbling when you spend all day watching a bobber bounce on the water and the birds are picking them off at will. Gary first thing we did when we saw it was go next door and tell the neighbors. They breed these little yorkie poo things.. they look like ewoks and would fit comfortably in your pocket lol. They rounded them up and put them inside. We weren't concerned about our dogs, try as it might it's not gonna carry off a rottie or black lab

Shad collect in mass at the dam falls of Lake Rodman in central Florida on some type of breeding event. Many ospreys feed on them. The crab trappers snag them for baiting their traps. Those ospreys are impressive fisherman. The ocean mullet come way up im the fresh water rivers and serve as the ospreys year round food. They swim shallow and make fair game for osprey.Could fill the cooler in a hour-ha.

Great pix! Eagles are all over the place here in Florida... they are so dense that in parts of Merritt Island, there's a giant nest practically on every other telephone pole (and sometimes they fall down). The populations must be so huge that they had to spread out more for food.
It's really wonderful to see the return of those big birds everywhere!!!
