Just google James:). There's pages and pages of recipes for JUST lotus soup... and much discussion about the taste (like a sweeter potato). Check this out (doesn't include water lilies so I didn't post it, but sounds intriguing!): natures-water.com/education_information/edible_plants/index.htmlI had NOOO idea that you could eat cattails and bulrush!! Nor did I know that Wasabi is a water plant!!

Snuffy... these aren't 'tried and true' recipes. The waterlily stuff is from the Canadian museum based on historical food info from native Indians.... doesn't say one thing about how tasty they are! Right now, only James can test to see how edible:P. *hint*

Great pics and beautiful flowers Jim! Back at our old southern California home we put in a big turtle and lily pond with a marsh in back. Got liners from an outfit called Van Ness Water Gardens and then went by their nursery and bought a bunch of hybrids similar to what you've shown. Really fun for a couple of years and then everything starts to get too large and and it requires a lot of work to thin and clean out everything every year. Sure enjoyed the lily blooms though and all the wildlife the pond attracted. Also, the lilies grew so much we were able to provide plants for every other person we knew that wanted to plant a pond. Them aquatics grow unbelievably fast *L*.....Mel

They grow too fast Mel.Pot binding is my main problem. So scheduled plantings make or break you in this bussiness. Helen, you got to calm down about this swamp food.I have eaten cattails-the white meat from the roots up to the first split is great-like celery.Big ones in deeper water have a one inch plug about a foot long.Great source of safe drinking water due to filtration when surviving.Lotus seeds are great, sweet flag(acorus)is a hulucinagen they say.Deer tear my fences down to get to the water lilies-that's amazing.I have left openings in the fence and snared them but it's cruel and prefer not to.Now i use motion sensor flood lights/radio combo. If they want to stay out there and eat to the music then i insert a high velocty piece of metal in them....Will not think twice, and the game warden is needing to reduce population. Now the deer that eat the pond food are delicious Helen. The winter deer eat acorns and taste bitter.Sugar filled water lilys make for sweet meat and great deer jerky. My recipe is fast-500 degree peanut oil for a minute or 2-instant jerky.Marinate first. Yep,i guess i do eat pond plants.Thru a second party. That's the best i can do Helen.

Nope, not at all.The marinate totally eliminates the game.I do not care for venison steaks/roast,mixed w/beef fat and ground or jerky is about it.Summer deer are much less gamey.Great in sloppy joe, brunswick and barbiq
