That's a beauty. The bleach set it off. How do you know to use bleach or a mild acid?

James, this one isn't agatized. Acid would eat it up. Bleach is mild enough to remove the dark oxidation without damaging the fossil. I used 50/50 bleach and water.

Quite a few crabs have been found in the Pierre Shale here in South Dakota. Hoping to get one soon.

Wow, good tips on cleaning corals. Don, your fossils and minerals are spectacular. I have to fight myself to keep from wanting to become a fossil hunter too. I sure have learned a lot from reading your posts.

At long last I scored a couple of fossil pine cones for my collection. These contain fossilized pine nuts in some of the cells.

Thank you Rich. Too old to go out hunting them anymore, but will be bidding on some over the next few days.

It's been quite a while since I've posted any pics. Been sick since last November. But that hasn't stopped me from bidding on a few. The first was a get well gift from a friend. It's a partial unidentified fossil crab, extracted from a mud ball from the Pierre Shale formation in S.D. An ebay win. Another ebay win. A stromatolite from the Sahara Desert in Morocco. As I dig out other wins, I'll take and post pics.

Thanks Rich. I tried to take another pic after taking my noon meds. Couldn't hold my hands steady enough. I have a new (for me) and better camera, and a new copy stand. Got new and better photo lights coming. As soon as I figure out the new camera, I'll be able to get better pics.
