If i was desperate i would butcher one.They are kinda nasty to clean.And difficult to clean.My Florida relatives cook them.They do taste good,and are said to have all kinds of meat textures.I prefer to see them left alone.
I see a lot of gopher tortoise in Florida.His nest is a tunnel about 6 feet deep that is also the primary nest for diamond back rattler.It is a friendly turtle that eats out of your hand even when wild.Was a highly sought after food turtle but is now highly protected.
